Album Notes

Perfect Moment is the culmination of many years of life experience and songwriting. Porch Made of Cement and Look At Us Now are specific looks back into the past. Porch Made of Cement recalls memories of long summer days at my grandparents’ house and Look At Us Now goes back to my Peace Corps experience where I met my husband to be. I had so many idealistic (and unrealistic) thoughts about what love and marriage were all about, but soon realized that things can still be great even though they are not perfect.

Middle of Nowhere is the oldest song written in the early 90’s, “BK” (before kids), while driving from California to Colorado. Parts of Death Valley and Oh Gourd were also conceived while driving. In Death Valley, Jerry Andrews matches the wonder and excitement of a great camping excursion by adding lead guitar, bass, and drums. Michele Walker Tracy adds a fresh voice with her flute accents in Oh Gourd, a song about driving to a gourd farm and the creative process.

Bruce Lee probably took the longest to write. Back in college, a friend told me, “Choose or life chooses….” Those words start the song and every few years I would add to it not really knowing where it was going. One afternoon, probably somewhere in the late 90’s I saw a documentary about Bruce Lee. After learning about his philosophy and how it was depicted in Game of Death, 1978, (especially toward the end of the movie concluding with the fight with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), I finally finished the song.

Perfect Moment is a comment about those times that escape us because we are stuck in the past or focused on the future instead of enjoying the present moment. Slowly Risin’ is one of the most recent songs written about overcoming those valleys in our life and coming out stronger and wiser. The Jewelry Maker is about a friend; I enjoy writing about others because I am just the observer, not the observed. Again, Jerry Andrews has the golden touch adding slide guitar and strings to add richness to the song.

Produced and engineered by Jerry Andrews at Zona Sound.
