notes

Becky Barksdale is a guitar-playing wailer from Port Arthur, Texas who blends the flavors of electric blues and rock to create an intense, brooding, powerfully sensual style.

"Real Live" was recorded live at Spinout's recording studios in Burbank, California.

On stage, Becky Barksdale rocks the blues with convincing authority, combining fluid, fiery guitar licks with supple, edgy vocals.

The rough textures of her voice and the raw passion of her singing have invited comparisons to Port Arthur hometown heroine Janis Joplin, a correlation both flattering and disturbing to a woman who goes her own way.

While Becky finds comfort in the instant communication of a dark blues groove, she craves the adventure of experimental forms and feels compelled to go deep.

"Satisfy Me," a Barksdale original from the 1996 House of Blues Hot Biscuits Sampler, works the same thematic territory as Bessie Smith's "Do Your Duty," with decidedly different results.

With the release of the powerful, ground-breaking "Real Live" in 1999, Becky documents the reason for all of the buzz surrounding her.

Ten previously unreleased original tracks and a dramatic cover of the Willie Dixon classic "I Just Wanna Make Love to You" place her as one of blues' most dynamic performers.

  • Soulful blues , Exceptional singer
    author: Dan M.

This is blues with passion as blues should be. Becky has an extraordinary voice and she knows how to use it. Definitely one of the best, most passionate singers out there today, just incredible! The guitar playing is good. Don't expect SRV but she is good. Being a long time guitar player myself, I am always amazed by anyone who can sing and play simultaneously and do it well. This is a great live performance and I would jump at the chance to see her if she ever came to town (in my case, southeastern PA). Highly recommended!

  • Wonderful sound, great lyrics.

As a long time blues fan, this CD hit the spot! "Handle with Care" is a highlight.

  • This is a perfect music for physical enjoyment activities

Got a copy of this CD from someone who was on a Blues Cruise with Becky. Great music to sing along with and pretend you sound as good as she does.

  • Fantastic vocalist, guitarist, and songwriter!
    author: Lauren

I happened upon Becky after I purchsed a CD sampler of women in blues. I fell in love with her song "Satisfy Me"! Her music is a hypnotic and intoxicating blend of toe-tapping, guitar-screaming pick-me-ups and sultry, lovemakin' blues ballads. She's become my new favorite blues babe!

This is an awesome live blues album. It reminds me of the Deep Blues soundtrack where, on a Junior Kimbrough cut, "Junior Blues", the audience is doing its thing in the background. The cacophony of the venue seems to add to Becky's gritty performance. My only criticism of the album has to do with the choice of songs. In a couple of instances, Becky's profound voice and musicianship could have been showcased more effectively. But, overall a great CD.

  • amazing - sings to the soul
    author: the Rock

I love this CD and I need Christmas presents for my friends.

  • Outstanding live performance
    author: Leigh Cagan

Bought this one solely on the basis of others' reviews and am enjoying every cut. Becky Barksdale and the band take a song or two to really get ripping, but once they do, they're unstoppable. Highly recommended.

  • superb.
    author: Rob Jenkins

This CD was immediately accesible, no need to be a fan or an enthusiast of any kind of genre... inspiring and dirty all at once. A real gem, and it got my teenage kids curious too, so it has real crossover appeal without losing it's purity. I could sleep with this album and feel blissfully abused in the morning...

  • Great!!!!!!!!!!
    author: Bill

I would LOVE to hear her in person but this will have to do for now. She can PLAY and WAIL!!

  • Unbelievable live act to see, highly reccomend checking her out Live
    author: Johnny Blade

Saw her at Middletown OH and this live CD captures that show a lot better than her latest Studio CD. Closest thing I have ever seen capturing Janis Joplins intensity on stage and probably the best female rock blues guitarist I have ever seen (including Bonnie Raitt, Susand Tedeschi and I am a huge fan of both those women) Definately a must have live blues CD to add to your collection...Hope you come back to Ohio again...

  • What an incredible performance!
    author: altadenabrokenheart

Listening to I WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU will make you want to be a part of the action. This amazingly soulful artist exudes passon and blues magic seldom heard anywhere you look or listen. Why isn't she a household name? If you've loved and lost, WRAP ME UP will touch you're heart and bring tears to your eyes. This is great stuff!!!

  • There is no justice in the universe
    author: Eric Dean

There is no justice in the universe, if this CD, somehow, someway, someday, does not end up getting major attention and/or major sales. B.B. is the female Stevie Ray, no joke. Check out Bigger Than the Moon and Wrap Me Up. This is quality, knock-you-on-your-ass material.

  • Great vocals and guitar...must for Texas Blues lovers!
    author: Gary Hess

Great vocals and guitar. One of the best singers/songwriters out there. The more you listen to her the better she gets.Texas needs more of this sound!

  • What a voice
    author: Paul Higgins

What a voice! In a live performance there is generally little electrical interference, so it is a natural as can be, and it is brilliant. Live performances show warts and all, but there are none to be heard in Becky's voice. That voice so suits the variety of Blues songs presented on this album. You need to visit the UK, and Blackpool in particular to show off this live talent.

  • the best most soulful cd i have experianced in a long time
    author: mike flatwound

The feeling of this cd blows me away.Kick ass cd to say the least.Hope you play in CT area in the future.I would like to see you perform live.

  • THis lady kicks the blues in the f-ing ass.
    author: DJ

Great seering blues record. This is a must for all blues fans wanting a jolt! Cannot stop listening to this CD. Is her new CD available? Please, Please come to Jax, Florida.

  • Rockin’ electric blues.

Electric blues and rock in an intense, brooding, powerfully sensual style-recorded live! Becky Barksale rips it up in a no-nonsense live recording, crowd noise and all. What if Stevie Ray Vaughan sang like Janis Joplin? What if it was all one person? Any fan of lively and rockin’ blues will love this CD. From uptempo driving knock-you-out bar-room blues rock, to the smoky, cry-in-your-whiskey real blues, her playing is amazing. Forget all stereotypes. Really tasteful playing in a truly authentic recording that reminds me of growing up in Chicago surrounded on all sides by the best blues music in the world.

after hearing this cd im in totally aw. I've never heard anything like it. looking forward to seeing her play live regardless of where i have to go to see her. Shes simplying amazing.

  • She's a damn good players.
    author: Dirtyblues.com

I'm not saying you should check out Becky Barksdale because She is a female guitarist in a male dominated genre. You should check her out because She's a damn good players.

  • Bad To the Bone!
    author: Biscuit Miller

Becky Played the Blues Fest in Indiana and she Rock the House.. Cant wait to see her again this year, Keep ROCKIN Becky! Biscuit Miller

  • Like Stevie Ray With A Sex Change!
author: Wow! From Another Chick Guitar Player

Hard to find a girl guitar player who REALLY plays the guitar..ANDyou manage to pack in some mean vocals... thought you were black for a minute! You Go, Girl!

  • She's Very Good!
    author: Jim Wiley

Gigged with her in the 80's and she's still good!

  • WOW!
    author: Blueshammer

I have to agree that the people talking in the background is somewhat annoying; I kept wondering...aren't they believing what they're seeing? I caught Becky at Bayfont Blues Fest in Duluth. Although I haven't smoked cigarettes in thirty years, I NEEDED one after her performance....WHOA! I am thrilled to have recommended her for the Owatonna Music Festival. Really lookin' forward to seein' her again!

  • Smoldering blues player you need to hear and see
    author: So Cal Blues Fan

Not a weak song on this CD. I've had the pleasure of seeing her handle the lead & rhythm guitar chores and vocals at the same time live, if Stevie Ray had a sister it would be her. You won't see a better live performer on any level. Brought some friends along to see her last time and they were floored! CD is a must have for any Texas blues fan. Treat yourself right, buy the CD and see her A.S.A.P!

  • Her live shows are as good as the CD
    author: Joe Sundberg

I saw her last week at the Bayfront Blues Festival - and her show was as good or better than the CD. The people talking on the CD are annoying (couldn't they have filtered that out ?!?!) - but you forget about that, once she gets her groove going. Her voice and presense are nothing short of astonishing !!

  • Real Texas Blues done with gritty Texas guitar sound
    author: Bob Wood, Musicians Hotline

Becky Barkdales Real Live is a Texas Blues masterpiece. Gritty Texas guitar and a strong sexy voice that is powerfull. Barksdales originals are well placed along with a Willie Dixon tune. She turns Dixon's I Just Want To Make Love To You into her song. Full of Texas soul Barksdale leaves you breathless with Satisfy Me, Little Bit Wild, and Going Back To Texas. This album contains real rockin blues. Becky Barksdale is the Real Deal on Real Live!

  • Great Stuff!!
    author: John

Some of the most sensual blues I've heard. While the instrumentation is very good, this CD is all about Becky's voice - and it will make your blood run hot. When she sings, Satisfy Me, or I Just Want to Make Love to You, you believe it -- cold showers optional.

  • Becky sends her music with a Cosmic level of energy!
    author: Cy Collins

This is the Blues equivalent of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Becky sends heavy-duty, body-and-mind blasting blues, with cosmic energy levels. This release profiles the Blues from A to Z, while the artist easily compliments each style. Most listeners will recognize the amazing Satisfy Me from the HOB's Essential Women In Blues release; after that teaser, finally, you can have some more Barksdale! Even though the quasi-live audience seems to be totally ignoring Becky, the cuts are full bodied and well recorded: you will easily be able to ignore the audience! I Just Want to Make Love to You just may be better than sex! Every cut will leave you wanting more.
