Barnstormers scrap first CD try, start fresh
RYAN HICKMAN

Two months ago, local doom country band Barnstormers had its first full album done. It was recorded, in the can and artwork was being discussed.

Then the quartet had a change of heart.

"We deleted everything off all of the hard drives," Ronnie Moore, the band's lead man on vocals, rhythm guitar and banjo, deadpanned. "We thought we were finished. Then, I was racking my brain. 'We've done it all wrong; we've overshot it.'

The four-piece of Moore, Christopher Wilson on cello, guitarist and mandolin player Brad Herring and Tyler Westmeyer on bass have been playing live shows (clad in all black) and recording with a minimalist country, Americana sound.

But the album wasn't transcending it.

"With this band in particular, we have stripped it down to the most basic element and here we were trying to make the 'White Album'," Moore said, referring to The Beatles' famous LP. "It didn't really reflect what we were trying to achieve."

So Barnstormers went back to work at Jam Session studio in Madison and just three weeks ago wrapped up "Switchblade Serenades: A Collection of Unfortunate Songs."

"Switchblade Serenade" is the first full song in the 10-track oeuvre that mixes organic and rootsy hymns with large-sounding orchestral cuts.

A journey through the Alabama countryside

Each song is so different and so good in it's own way. The whole CD is definitely enjoyable! The start is the lively opener Switchblade Serenade that almost demands foot stomp and hand clap when the music crescendos. Then it moves to Wayfaring Stranger with its elegant simplicity and soulful vocals. Dancing from that to Friendly Conversation which is a spry ditty with smooth vocals. Next is Firewater which feels classicly country. For the The Devil's Still I only have one word: jump! Moonshiner has haunting vocals and instrumentation. Zombie Heart Transplant works old school rock flavor that took me back to 70s childhood and momma's records. Suddenly it's Serves'em Right's saloon hall feel. And then Street Preacher gives more jump with a side of toe-tap and hand clap. No Shame provides more haunting, moving intstrumental and vocals, carries me off in my mind. Ending the journey with Switchblade Reprise country jazz swing. If you don't want your regular average ordinary country then this is the CD for you.

The stripped-down sound of this music is haunting. It can't be easily categorized as it has elements of roots country, blues, jazz, and a splash of classic rock. The lyrics are complex, clever, and funny. One listen is not enough - I keep hearing something new everytime I replay it - and I am sure I will next time. Love it!
