SONG NOTES
Flight Of The Bumblebee - Rimsky-Korsakov is turning over in his grave as we speak, or maybe he isn’t. Piano solo by Andy Langham. Lead Trumpet Tony
Bonsera and Adolfo Acosta.
Easy Does It – The title says it. Melodic, easy listening. Bob Summers Trumpet solo. Lead Trumpet Pete DeSiena.
Exceptionally Moist – Written about a birthday cake. Chocolate of course with white frosting. Tenor Sax solo Vince Trombetta. Lead Trumpet Tony Bonsera.
Trottin’ – Happy sounding melody with a great Tenor Sax solo by Kevin Garren. Pete DeSiena Lead Trumpet.
The Other Half – Two charts here. One pretty and the other burning. Alto solo Keith Bishop. Written Trumpet solo Pete DeSiena. Lead Trumpet Pete DeSiena and Tony Bonsera.
Lobbers No More – Written on the chord changes of “Just Friends” Get it? Clever eh? Piano solo Andy Langham. Trumpet solo Bob Summers. Alto solo Tom Luer. Lead Trumpet Pete DeSiena.
Put Your Arms Around Me, Honey – For you song buffs this chart starts with the verse in 3/4 and moves to 7/4 for the melody then to 4/4 and continues through the wringer. Bob Summers Trumpet solo. Pete DeSiena Lead Trumpet.
Limes Away – Chord changes sound like “Limehouse Blues” Why is that? Great solos here by Andy Langham Piano, Bob Summers Trumpet and Tom Luer Alto Sax. Lead Trumpet Tony Bonsera lifts the whole band on the last ensemble. I love it!
Slow Walkin’ – Neal Hefti lives! I wrote about five of these Lil’ Darlin’ type charts. Again, melodic easy listening. Tom Luer Alto solo. Lead Trumpet Adolfo Acosta.
Minus Five – Years ago I tried to write a song using mostly major 7th chords with flat fives or minus fives as they are sometimes called. Hence the title. This is a Piano feature for Andy Langham. Lead Trumpet Tony Bonsera and Adolfo Acosta.
Sprung Time - Written about the end of Spring. You know, when Spring has Sprung? Try whistling this melody. This is a melody? Baritone Sax solo Brian Williams. Trumpet solo Mark Lewis. Lead Trumpet Pete DeSiena.
Avalon – Let the Tenors play! Features Tenor Sax soloists Kevin Garren [first] and Vince Trombetta. Outstanding performance here by the whole band. Drummer Bob Leatherbarrow holds it all together. Lead Trumpet Tony Bonsera.
SPECIAL THANKS AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I would like to thank everyone who helped me with this project, especially Tim Pinch, Judy Neff, Vince Trombetta president of Local 47, all the guys in the band and in particular Keith Bishop and Brian Williams for copying all the music. A special thanks again to Mike Julian, director of the L.A. Valley College Recording Workshop and his assistants for their help in set up and extra mics. A great job by everyone.
I play a Getzen 1050 Trombone exclusively with a Marcinkiewicz 10S mouthpiece.

typical Mike Barone - first rate!
author: peter gracie
Mike Barone's work has always been first rate however he's raised the bar with this CD (excuse the pun!). There's something in this session for everybody from laid back to absolutely cookin'. The arrangements, ensemble and section work plus some great soloists and a rhythm section which could propel the next earth/moon shot combine to make a CD well worth having. I recommend it to fans not only of big band jazz but of jazz generally.
