Album Notes

Following Desmond's final performance at the Monterrey Jazz Festival in 1976, Seaside Post reporter Robert Miskimon wrote, "Desmond has achieved what every serious artist strives for, total authenticity and purity."

Baron von Remmel has produced an tribute to Paul Desmond called "Alone Together."
Baron's purity brings to life the regal authenticity of one of Jazz History's brightest stars, the late Mr. Paul Desmond.

Baron von Remmel has the distinction of being Lake Tahoe's very own Jazz Saxophonist, with a golden alto sound reminiscent of the late Paul Desmond, of Dave Brubeck's group.
As a 27 year resident of the west shore of Lake Tahoe, CA., he is a familiar figure, not only as a performer, but also as a jazz educator, in the music classroom of North Tahoe High School, and as a private instructor.

He studied music at highly acclaimed North Texas State University and received a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Jazz Education. Baron plays alto, soprano, tenor and baritone saxophones. He has appeared in showrooms, lounges and nightclubs, from Lake Tahoe and Reno, all the way down to Las Vegas, performing, not only as a musician, but also as a music director and show producer.

Baron von Remmel has peformed with his jazz groups at the West Shore Cafe, in Homewood, CA., for 18 years, and also performs regularly at Sunnyside Resort, near Tahoe City, Moody's Bistro, in Truckee, CA., the Sienna Hotel Casino, in Reno, the Timberline Lounge Sunday Jazz Brunches in Reno, and at Northstar at Tahoe, near Truckee, CA.

He has performed with Abbe Lane, Billy Preston, The Coasters, Larry Collins, Zella Lehr, Surprise Package, Liazon, Rubber Biscuit, The Drifters, The Temptations, Melissa Spangler/Las Vegas, Little Anthony & the Imperials, BJ Thomas, Harry Blackstone, Wayne Newton, Tommy Tutone and the Atlanta Rhythm Section.

Baron also performed with the orchestra at the 1996 Miss Universe Pageant in Las Vegas, the 1983 Bob Hope Desert Classic in Palm Springs, and was a member of the Reno Eldorado Casino's orchestra for the Grammy Award winning Broadway Musical "SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE." He was the music arranger, assistant Music Director and featured soloist for the Reno Hilton's musical swing revue production of "WORK THAT SKIRT" and "ESCAPE."

Baron von Remmel has opened concerts for such artists as Bill Cosby and The Yellowjackets, and performs many styles of music from classic jazz artists such as Paul Desmond, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan and Duke Ellington, to smooth jazz artists such as David Sanborn, Kenny G, Grover Washington, Jr, Spyro Gyra and Richard Elliot.

He is currently Producer, Director and co-star in an original Musical Comedy called "NEVADA'S STORY."

Exceptional tribute to the most lyrical of altoists
author: Brian Rogoff
I'm a Paul Desmond completist, I have practically everything that's available on CD from Desmond, with Brubeck, and as a leader. This CD really stands out from the other tributes. Von Remmel doesn't attempt to copy Desmond's style, the tribute is in his own voice, but it's clear that he was heavily influenced by Desmond, and I think that any Desmond fan would love to add this one to his collection. The song selection is execllent, there's not a dud on the album. Bossa Antigua and Desafinado are standouts, and I like his version of Take Five as well. I'm looking forward to von Remmel's next album.

Absolutely Wonderful
author: Jim DeLauro
This is a very enjoyable CD. While I do not think there are any weak tracks on this CD, for me "Bossa Antigua", "Alone Together" and "The Nearness Of You" are particulary good. Remmel is here, as usual, outstanding!

Very enjoyable and FIRST RATE!!
author: Prof. Jim Riggs, Univ. of North Texas
Baron's sound, ensemble playing and impeccable intonation makes the project very enjoyable to listen to. He has assembled a fine rhythm section, the choice of compositions is very tasteful and the entire project is first rate. I'm so glad that he has continued keeping the University of North Texas jazz tradition alive. I am very proud of him. His former saxophone teacher, Jim Riggs, Regents Professor of Saxophone, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas

Stunningly 'Old School'.... smooth.... very classy !!!!!
author: J. R. Covington
Superb choice of songs. Others have merely copied Desmonds style and thus created tributes, but none have captured the gradations of feeling. This CD is a rich artistic performance, full of nuance. For those who have had the pleasure of having heard Paul Desmond live with Brubeck, this CD will bring a sincere smile and an agreeing nod. Remmel, my hat is off to you.
