An amazing album of guitar-based ambience that echoes the majestic ‘70s works of Fripp & Eno.

notes

The idea of improvised music created with tape loops has been around for a long time. Earlier pioneers used reel to reel tape machines, with sound on sound, to create soundscapes of lengthy, meditative pieces that would both be created by the performer and by the gear itself. In most cases the loops would begin to generate a musical direction that would be unknown to the composer. Like many John Cage compositions that were based on mathematic formulas that removed the indvidual composer from any familiar or conventional modes of inspiration, the loops themselves act in a similar way. These days, most guitarists and composers use digital gear that can cleanly and easily record the loops, as well as speed them up, slow them down, or play them backwards. Most of these soundscapes are composed and recorded simultaneously, with only stereo reverb being added in post production. The performances are played on Gibson guitars and recorded direct, with a wide variety of both new digital, and vintage analog effects. "The Atomsmasher's Noisy Trade" features three tracks for a total of one hour in length.

An amazing album of guitar-based ambience that echoes the majestic ‘70s works of Fripp & Eno, the 2004 CD from Canadian guitarist David Barrett is a three part sixty minute masterpiece of dreamy guitar soundscapes. The moods on The Atomsmasher’s Noisy Trade are glacial and nocturnal while the shifting musical sands also summons the dark teutonic electronica of Edgar Froese and Tangerine Dream. Emerging in the ‘90s with his solo New Age guitar sound, Barrett exceeds his earlier efforts with The Atomsmasher’s Noisy Trade. The three part sixty minute album shines a light on Barrett’s unique ability to combine experimental film soundtrack sounds into an orchestral, ambient context. Performed on Gibson guitars and recorded direct, Barrett’s sonic sojourn is greatly enhanced with a number of digital and vintage analog effects. Robert Silverstein - 20th Century Guitar
