Parachute

by Bar Scott

Sarah McLaughlan, Annie Lennox, Joni Mitchell, Enya, Laura Nyro and Julia Fordham all wrapped-up in one distinct voice we call Bar Scott. Heart-felt, personal, well-crafted and beautifully sung, Bar plays piano primarily, but also guitar. "Lots of vocals"

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"Parachute" is Bar Scott’s fifth studio recording of original material and features a ton of amazing talent. 13 songs one of which is a cover of Sly Stone’s “Everyday People” performed with background singers Jen Starr and Callie Hershey with Tony Levin on bass and singing too. Sam Zucchini moves the song with a great frame drum track.

The 12 originals are performed by Bar on her own piano. The record was recorded at her home studio in upstate NY, so it’s the first CD on which she’s playing her own Steinway piano.

The CD is the first recording of Bar’s since the death of her son, Forrest, in 2002. The songs reflect her love in a deep, celebratory and reflective way. This is in no way a sad collection of songs. These are songs of love. As usual, you will feel something when you listen to Bar, but care was taken to create songs that express her love so that anyone who is in love or who has loved can feel that love more deeply.

Musicians include: Tony Levin (bass; Peter Gabriel Band, Paul Simon, King Crimson…), Jerry Marotta (drums; Hall and Oates, Ani DiFranco, Peter Gabriel Band) David Sancious (string arrangement and keyboards; Sting, Bruce Springsteen), Kevin Bartlett (guitarist and producer; Happy Rhodes and his own, wonderful ambient music scores), Fred Hand (guitarist; The Metropolitan Opera’s classical guitarist) Troy Messinger, oboe, Sera Smollen, cello, the string quartet called Ethel, Bar's husband, Peter Schoenberger, on bass, and so many more. And the engineer who caught all of these musicians in the studio is Dave Cook whose work includes the B52s, Graham Parker and Ravi Shankar. All in all, this is an incredible assemblage of gifted musicians gathering around the unique voice of Bar Scott. If you like to be moved and touched and if you like to hum along and hear a melody you never imagined yourself, check Bar out. You won’t be disappointed.

Special note about the artwork: the photographs on the interior booklet of Parachute are wonderful shots of birds taken by Bar's husband, Peter Schoenberger. In fact, he has taken all of the photos for the packaging, but the bird pictures are particularly poignnant and beautiful.

Excerpt from a review of Parachute by Mare Wakefield , Independent Music Editor for Performing Songwriter Magazine (DIY March/April 2007)

"....The record floats gracefully through the atmosphere, enveloping listeners with a silken touch and a life-supporting strength.

....Scott’s ethereal voice invites listeners on a soulful, inspirational journey, while the stark piano accompaniment lets her lyrics shine….

Parachute will set you down in a place you’ve never been before; trust us when we tell you to take the dive."

Excerpt from a review of Parachute written for the Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange by Mike Jurkovic (2006) Reprinted in Chronogram Magazine September 2006

"Evoking a much more compelling Sarah McLachlan and the iconic Joni Mitchell (rich, organic melodies and vocal harmonies), Scott's sixth disc weaves a sumptuous musical tapestry, each song even more beautiful than its predecessor.

…Scott's piano based songs become meditations on the fragile threads we consistently strain at getting from one end of the day to the next and the small beauties and great loves we miss while on that constricted, linear pursuit….

Pin-pointing favorite tracks on Parachute is like shredding a whole cloth, but for those of you with short attention spans, start with the opening title track, then try the exquisite Sarah. Then program Come to Me, World on Fire and Oh God. Then be kind to yourself and let the disc play full. You'll hear what I mean...."

Review by Angie Chaney, Vision Music Group, Nashville for "Roots Music Report"

"I loved this CD. Bar Scott and Parachute would be the perfect CD to enjoy after a long stressful day, and then simply float on the easy listening melodies, touching lyrics and beautiful voice. Once I heard this CD I was an instant fan of Bar Scott."

Classic Bar Scott. It just gets better and better.
Parachute is a wonderful recording. Twelve great original songs and one great rendition of 'Everyday People'. This is an emotional journey of joy, sadness, insightfulness and beauty. Classic Bar Scott! I particularly love the title song 'Parachute' (oboe and cello are exquisite), the joyful celebration of 'World on Fire' and the sensual and poignant 'Come To Me'. I very highly recommend this CD!
