Basczax 2.0 - a very strange and twisting tale...
Life is weird. 30 years ago, in the halcyon days of the post-punk period ( 78-81 roughly) there was a band called Basczax (pron:Bassax), They wer a provincial new wave band from Teesside who had some independent releases that John Peel played.
Two tracks appeared on Fast Records ‘Earcom 2’ 12 inch and the band also released their own single, "Madison Fallout".
A tour with early OMD increased their fanbase: the band already had a strong local following. Then...nothing happened and the band started to feel restless and frustrated – a familiar story of so many provincial bands deemed to be ‘promising’ at that time.
One reviewer described them as ‘an angry and urban Roxy Music’...the band were thrilled to be compared to one of their major influences.
However, provincial obscurity continued to trouble the band and they split in late 1980.
Life took many twists and turns. People got day jobs. People got married. Had children. Thinking ‘this is it’...The band members drifted into middle age secretly thinking ‘But I’m too cool for this’...
A casual online conversation in Jan 2010 led to the band reforming online in Feb 2010. The singer and main songwriter Alan (Sav) S avage told the others he had songs from back then that he never showed the band.
He also had new songs ‘in the spirit of that era’....weeks later, the band had completed ‘Disco Apocalypse’ , a new song that is reminiscent of that strange disco/punk era but also very contemporary sounding.
The guys pushed on and soon completed a ‘lost song’: ‘Sexy Robot’. Fired up on the new material , the band continue to make what will ostensibly be their first album, later this year.
Basczax are proof that chemistry never dies. It just takes a very very long sabbatical. Because that was the amazing revelation they all felt when they reformed to make new music and re-visit and re-vamp some of the old songs. The spark was still there.
Why prattle on? Listen to the tracks and make your own mind up...as I said, life is weird....
Basczax: ‘Disco Apocalypse ‘– the album will be available from September 2010. It will be brilliant.
