William "Count" Basie (1904-1984) in 1935 leads Bennie Moten's orchestra (after Moten's death in a car crash). Since then, his band will present immortal masterpieces of jazz and soloists such as Walter Page, Jo Jones and Lester Young. During the 1950s Basie forms a new group featuring arranger and composer Neal Hefti. He dies in 1984 but his band and his music are still touring the world.
