In the Fall of 2002, after a year or so of playing in the Boston subways, Lisa Bastoni packed up her gear and hit the road. After swinging out to California and back on a tour of coffee shops and sidewalks, making just enough in tips to get to the next town, she holed up in her grandfather's old barn/sculpture studio in Connecticut. Tired and in a funk, she got a job at the Starbucks around the corner and tried to stay put. While attempting to quit music, the songs poured out. The road called. The songs kept coming. The road hung up and called back later.
The songs on Your First Sweetheart were mostly written in the barn, though one was written in a laundromat in Nashville, another inside a tent during a west Texas thunderstorm. In addition to Lisa's acoustic guitar, you will hear Josh Kantor on upright bass, Sean Staples (Resophonics) on mandolin, bouzouki and banjo, and Lloyd Thayer on lap steel. The album was recorded over the course of two weeks in February 2004 at Tree House Music in Arlington, Massachusetts.
At the time of the release of Your First Sweetheart, Lisa moved from CT back to the Boston area, where she continued play both above and below ground before moving to Austin, TX.
A year away was enough to make Lisa homesick for New England. She moved back to MA (again!) in April, 2006.

Innocence not yet faded to jaded
author: Tony Peyser, Santa Monica Mirror
Massachusetts folkie Lisa Bastoni’s first [studio] album is Your First Sweetheart. “If I Had My Way” evokes the initial blush of romance and “Ghosts” paints the way it can just as easily slip away. “Rockin’ Out” contemplates a high school band as they get older and stay together even though their dreams are looking pretty ragged. “Not For Sale” is a quiet girl power ballad about being who you are. Bastoni’s songs come from a place where innocence hasn’t yet faded into jaded.

A Fantastic Listening Experience
author: Douglas Sloan, Metronome Magazine
In the folk traditions of Emmy Lou Harris and Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriter-guitarist Lisa Bastoni follows in those footsteps with her excellent new offering Your First Sweetheart. With an intelligent, intuitive woman’s eye, Bastoni dissects everything from life, love, friendship and more with the jangle of an acoustic guitar and her crystal clear angelic voice. Her delivery is simple and understated as her music surrounds the listener in a magical way.
Not many entertainers can pull of solo guitar and voice in such a convincing manner, yet Bastoni has no problem winning the listener over. Her lyrics are vivid and well crafted. Josh Kantor on bass, Sean Staples on mandolin, bouzouki and banjo and Lloyd Thayer on lap steep all add subtle intricacies to Lisa’s songs making for a fantastic listening experience. Keep your ear open for this talented singer-songwriter because Lisa Bastoni is a star on the rise.

Great voice, great words
author: Steve of Leominster,MA
Just got Lisa's CD from CDBaby and it's an amazing album* (use of such word indicates life before Reagan). Anyway, lots of excellent songs and music. Luckily, I'm from Massachusetts and can't wait to see Lisa's live shows.
This is a CD to buy and a name to remember.
