Captivated at first listen

I'll be honest here... I typed in Modest Mouse to see what might present itself and was rewarded beyond my wildest expectations. Suprise me they did. The spare and somewhat raw vocals that Dean presents serve well to draw the listener into his landscape of all that is human, from disenchanted to forlorn, from playful and quirky to downright funny, from pretty to heartbreakingly, sadly sweet. If you don't care for any of these moods never fear, you won't be left there for long. In short, the instrumentals are inventive and attention grabbing, the voice rings true with endearing simplicity, and the lyrics... Oh, the lyrics... They will remind you of a past, or the present, or someplace you hope to be some day, or at least get to witness and live through vicariously. I'll leave the good music on for the ghosts, and hope for more soon to sate them and me in future.

Making The World Braver and Bolder
author: john ludington
Dean Haakenson is a fearless performer who reveals his deepest passion through songs his audience consistently sings along to. A friend to all, he instantly includes us in what feels like the Dean Haakenson movement; he is a force that is somehow simultaneously demanding and kind, towering and comedic. Dean’s story encourages us to say anything, be anything and to do it now! He gives away kitchenware and other household appliances. Dean’s music is certainly accessible (you may be singing along at your first show) but listen further for his dynamic rise and fall, his melodic intricacies and the grandeur of his trials and triumphs. A pillar for songwriters everywhere Dean strips himself of inhibition yet still he takes command; emotionally and mentally unleashed, Dean Haakenson resolutely puts on a tremendous show.

I'm not so good at writing reviews... but I really liked the samples I heard on CDBaby... so I got it... because of the soul coughing mention... as it turned out... im not sure the soul coughing connection... but i really like this stuff. considering the instrumentation... there's an amazing amount of depth to the music. It works both as a background type of music but also as feature for whatever I'm doing.
Sometimes music just has to feel good. Be Brave Bold Robot feels good.
