notes
Hailing from Philadelphia, BBQ RIFF is a collective that wants to be heard but strives to be honest. Featuring the compositions of bassist Matthew Cantwell, BBQ RIFF draws heavily on the music of Miles Davis and the alumni of his various electric bands. The mark of other pioneers on the cutting edge such as Tony Williams’ “Lifetime” and Ornette Coleman’s “Primetime” can be heard as well.
All of these influences come together, forming a frame that allows the collective to create its own sound while retaining the accessibility of a well crafted song. “Jazz”, “Fusion”, “Jam-Band”, “Progressive”, whatever you want to call it, BBQ RIFF hopes to be a reassuring voice in this age of confusion.
Take a moment to listen, maybe even dance.
