Betty Bryant
Weathervane (Bry-Mar)
IT’S RARE THAT musicians
sing and play with equal
skill. Los Angeles veteran
Betty Bryant can make
such a claim – her lived-in
voice and laidback phrasing
sounds like a cross between
Shirley Horn and a young
Billie Holiday while her
versatile playing does bebop, samba and torch song balladry
with uniformly strong results. Here on Weathervane, her
fourth album, Bryant steps away from the standards to concentrate
her own originals as well as new tunes from others.
She gets supple support on the vocal numbers from her unobtrusive
trio while all four take turns stepping out on the
instrumentals. Highlights include the tender title track, the
upbeat “I Saw Stars” and wholly samba-ized original “Daikanyama
Samba.” – Tad Hendrickson
