Betty Bryant is either a singer who plays piano or a pianist who sings. Each listener seems to have an opinion one way or the other. The truth is she seems to do either with equal facility.
In 1987, after a concert for the Niles Home for Children in Kansas City, she was awarded the Key to the City and June 13th of that year was proclaimed Betty Bryant Day. She has been active in the Dolo Coker Scholarship Foundation since its inception in 1983 serving on the board and as a judge of applicants each year, as well as performing at their fundraising event. She also was guest artist at the Langston Hughes Cultural Center in Seattle, WA for Dollars for Scholars, another fundraising event, in 1997 and 1998. Her one venture in the theater, a play called "Louisiana Women," earned her a Drama-Logue Critics' Choice award for Musical Director of the Year. She has appeared in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, and at Tableaux Lounge in Tokyo, Japan where she continues to perform for three months each year.

Betty Bryant
Weathervane (Bry-Mar)
IT’S RARE THAT musicians
sing and play with equal
skill. Los Angeles veteran
Betty Bryant can make
such a claim – her lived-in
voice and laidback phrasing
sounds like a cross between
Shirley Horn and a young
Billie Holiday while her
versatile playing does bebop, samba and torch song balladry
with uniformly strong results. Here on Weathervane, her
fourth album, Bryant steps away from the standards to concentrate
her own originals as well as new tunes from others.
She gets supple support on the vocal numbers from her unobtrusive
trio while all four take turns stepping out on the
instrumentals. Highlights include the tender title track, the
upbeat “I Saw Stars” and wholly samba-ized original “Daikanyama
Samba.” – Tad Hendrickson

Swinging, clear, musical vocals, interesting originals from a Los Angeles favori

This CD is further evidence of an artist who refuses to be complacent. Betty's vocals are clear, musical, and infused with humor, and insight. There is a relaxed, swinging quality to these recordings that make me think it would have been fun to be in the studio with these people. Great backup musicians, including the wonderful Robert Kyle.
