Finally, there's a new review that has some nice things to say about it: http://www.lethaldeath.com/Crimson/Archives/ResidentDVDvil/Archives/RD_DonetheImpossible.php

BROWNCOATS: Our first shipment of On the Drift sold out in mere minutes.

Or second (bigger) shipment sold out in a day.

So we stashed a bunch of cargo into the nooks and crannies of our smuggling ship, and now there is plenty of bright'n'shiny stock here at CDBaby. In fact, now that we have plenty on hand, we're offering a 10% discount on orders of two or more, which is just good insurance against your friends "borrowing" your copy.

About the album:

People often come up to me and ask questions like, "Hey, Cedric, why did you decide to record an album about Firefly?" or "Hey, Cedric, where do you get off writing music about a canceled TV show, anyway?" or "Hey, Cedric, are you gonna eat that?"

Well, there's more information to answer two of those three questions at http://www.bedlambards.com/Browncoats.html

But don't go running off. I'll try to answer some of those questions right here, right now.

(By the way, for those who don't know, a "Browncoat" is a fan of the short-lived but much-loved television show Firefly and the movie that grew out of it, Serenity, both created by Joss Whedon, the mind behind such media hits as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Toy Story. You can read all about it at http://www.scifi.com/firefly/ )

Hawke and I decided to record an album of music inspired by Firefly and Serenity because we thought it was a sound business proposition. *snort* Whoo, if you believe that one, you're an easier mark than Simon Tam. I've got a land deal on Shadow for you . . .

Nah, the truth is that my muse became a Browncoat. Despite my best efforts, I just kept writing songs about Joss Whedon's genius. And then it snowballed. Hawke suggested I write a song about Wash called "Leaf on the Wind." A fan suggested the name "On the Drift" for one of the songs, and Hawke said it should be the name of the album, too. So we bought some plastic dinosaurs to perch on top of Tree's antiquated--um, I mean, vintage--recording gear, and set our minds to making an album.

It wasn't easy. During the summer, we had to wait until midnightish for the studio to be cool enough to record. When family illnesses ramped our schedule into overdrive, I opted to walk to the studio in the middle of a December ice-storm, rather than miss a critical mix-down session. The roads were too icy to drive on, and I actually had ice sheets caked onto my rain poncho when I got to Tree's place.

And one night, when it all seemed a bit too much, I was beginning to think that making this album was a really bad idea. I staggered home after a particularly harrowing session, and I decided to stare at my email before going to bed. There inside my inbox were three waves from the big damn 'verse telling me I was on the right track.

The first came from Joshua Horner, the fan who had named "On the Drift" for us. On his own, he decided to design a jing-chai album cover; you can see it at the top of this page. (He's working on some tee-shirt designs for us now. I'll let you know when they're finished.) The second came from Les Howard at The Signal Podcast, asking us to grant an interview; there's no more definite way to know you've arrived than to be on The Signal. And the third email was from Brandon Klassen, a Browncoat I've still never met, offering us a song he wrote. If you click on "Sail the Sky" over to your left, you'll see why we were eager to record it.

Of course, lots of other folks helped out a bunch. Scott Boswell took a break from his own recording to lay down some licks. Laura Leom added some sweet harmonies to Brandon's song. Tree Leom, our sound engineer and percussionist, shepherded the whole project from beginning to end. Jeremy Neish and Brian Wiser decided to use a lot of this album in their documentary about Firefly fans (www.DoneTheImpossible.com). Marc Gunn gave us excellent marketing advice. Susan Hazelmann generously provided financial backing with a thick slice of moral support. Hawke nobly pushed his own solo project to the back burner to make this a reality for the band; I can't talk enough about how much I appreciate him. And literally thousands of Browncoats downloaded samples, listened to interviews, cut and paste lyrics, transcribed lyrics (if they didn't know you could cut and paste them), sang our songs at press screenings, said mighty nice things about us on fireflyfans.net, and generally made us proud to do our part for the Browncoat Revolution.

It ain't over, folks . . .

WE WILL RISE AGAIN!

the music is the right mix of folk and Celtic style music and will bring back memories of the Eavesdown Docks or a cool night on Persehone.

  • Great Fun!
    author: Mal

Wonderful album for all Browncoats out there. Music really captures the essence of the series. River's Jig and Saffron's Wedding dance are just beautiful and the songs Leaf on the Wind and Sail the Sky are ideal to convert others to the cause. More please and soon.

  • Shiny!
    author: Richard

Super album, very evocative of the series we all love.

  • Just THANK YOU Cedric
    author: Kristi Kilbourne

Gave my first copy away cuz it made me too weepy, but had to replace it pretty damn quick. Second copy went to my best friend. Everyone I convert to Browncoatism seems to wind up with one. Just an awesome album. Cedric/Edmonson on the next film! And FU*K reality shows and Deal or No Deal!!! Get some intelligent stuff (ie Firefly) back on the boob tube!

  • Gorram Shiny!!
    author: Captain Vick Hartnell

I love this album, gotta be the best firefly music out there. My favourite is Sail the Sky, just beautiful. Choice work bro's

    author: Drew Johnson

I must fervently and zealously recommend this album to any and all fans of Firefly as well as any and all fans of Serenity and of course any and all fans of GOOD MUSIC!!! This album is musically brilliant but also very sentimental and irreverent. Buy it and then listen to it A WHOLE DAMN LOT!!!

  • Awesome and hilarious!
    author: Lilith

This CD was soooo good! A lot better than I had initially thought it would be. The parody songs are hilarious, and those at the end are really great, almost sad because of what they're about. But over all, if you liked the show and the movie, this is a definite must buy! I will say, you have to have seen both the show and the movie to get what all the songs are about, otherwise you might get lost on the parodies. But still...a MUST have for any Firefly/Serenity enthusiast...and I want my Big Damn Trilogy!!!!

  • excellent cd
    author: Jack

A real treat for all browncoats. Shiny! The music of the Bedlam Bards shows they are really fans of the show and have a great feel for the show. It really comes across that this CD is an act of love for the show Firefly. Highly recommended to any fan of the show.

  • Funny, exciting....what can I say??
    author: Steph

This Bedlam Bards album is the best gorram CD I've heard in a long time! From the "Ballad of Joss" to the Bards' rendition of the Firefly theme, it's funny, exciting....need I say more??

    author: Alexis Dority

this is a great CD, enjoyable playful and well thought out. Great music for Browncoats everywhere.

  • What are you waiting for? If you're a Browncoat order this CD!
    author: FireflyGal

This would be one of my Top 10 CD's to take with me if I were stranded on a deserted island. This CD was for a friend, I'd already purchased On the Drift from the Bards themselves. The songs compliment the 'Verse beautifully. Use of it for Done the Impossible was genius! I look forward to more 'verse inspired songs and seeing the Bards in person.

  • A Must for all Browncoats
    author: Amanda Moreau

I am so pleased that a friend left a comment on a website about this CD. I ordered it immediately, even though I was not familar with the Bedlambards before, and I truly enjoy the music. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

  • Wash Would Be Proud
    author: Heather Wales

Listening to Leaf on the Wind made me bawl like a baby. I loved all of the songs on this CD and totally recommend it, whether you are a Browncoat or not! Remember, Love keeps a boat in the air when she outta fall down. Keep on flyin', Serenity!

  • Filky 'Verse goodness, and gorram shiny Fun!
    author: Michael

My only problem is that the CD is much too short! More, more, more!! Very well done, and kudos to all!

  • Shiny!
    author: Amanda

I love this cd. I love the bards in general, but this cd is awesome! Great instrumentals and singing. And I love that the bards include their fans in their cd making process.

If your reading this, then, well, you have scrolled past some really glowing reviews of this album, so I'll add mine. This IS THE MUST HAVE FOR ALL BROWNCOATS!!!

  • It's Flantastic!
    author: Mary

This CD is amazing! There's not a single song I skip over (which almost never happens!). It's great for Browncoats and those who are still in denial of their Flan-ness. Buy it! You won't regret it!

  • Perfect gift for all my Browncoat friends
    author: Lauren

I love the way it has instrumentals in between the other songs. The entire album seems to flow together. I want to write a dance to "River's Jig".

  • How do i say this? OMFGROFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111one
    author: Captain Tight Pants

Well, to start, I'm really sad that I can't give it six stars. I LOVED this CD from the moment I heard about it while listening to old episodes of The Signal and knew that I had to have it. It really expresses the soul of the Browncoat and some of the lyrics make me want to forcibly make people listen to this CD. Remember, "We've done the impossible, and that makes us mighty." --Mal

    author: Kiel

This album was great! I now seem to have Leaf On The Wind stuck in my head, definitely my favorite. Saffron's wedding dance and On The Drift are also high up on my list. This album certainly captures the excitement and beauty of the Firefly 'verse.

  • Great, Wonderful, Love it
    author: Karen

Any fan of the show will love the cd.

  • A thoroughly enjoyable tribute
    author: Jason Creech

In "On the Drift", the Bedlam Bards demonstrate a true appreciation for the material. The songs are a fresh way of experiencing "Firefly" fandom. I play the CD at work, school, in my car, and at home while playing computer games or just as a way to block out the world while I study. I find myself singing the lyrics or imitating the instrumentals - especially the title track - constantly. I never buy CDs, but this one is a great value for Browncoats while including material that music lovers can appreciate in its own right.

  • Browncoat -must- have!
    author: SapphireJ

I fell in love with this CD, just a few minutes into it. The lyrics are great, the music is wonderful. Absolutely Shiny! If you don't own a copy of this yet, then you really -should-!

  • All I can say is WOW!
    author: Tessara Dudley

This CD was absolutely wonderful. The music and lyrics are wonderfully matched to the show, and I love the voices. On The Drift was my absolute favorite, and I listened to it on repeat for days! This CD is an integral part of any Flan's FireFilk collection.

  • author: Travis

I loved this CD. Saffron's Wedding Dance, Sail the Sky, and The Rock Garden-are especially good. If you loved the music from Firefly-you'll love this music too!

  • great!
    author: Peri

Found these because of their links with Brobdingian Bards listened to some of it here - and took the plunge(i live in the uk) Even though not total fan of the series, really liked the cd, and my fella who missed it all - like it to. Well done Bedlam boys!

  • A Must Have for A Firefly Fan
    author: Shannon Farrell

This CD of music inspired by the all-too-short television series Firefly is a must-have for any Firefly fan. I've listened to a good bit of Firefly filk, but nothing compares to the wealth of music the Bedlam Bards have compiled on this CD. They capture the essence of the show, and embody it in each of their songs. This CD is a great value for the quality of work you get.

  • Fantastic CD, not just for Firefly fans
    author: Scott Steubing

I love the CD. I've listened to it several times since I got it. While Firefly fans will get the most out of it, I think people would enjoy it even if they've never heard of Firefly.

  • Worth listening to over and over - and giving!
    author: Jae Walker

This is my second copy, as I gave the first away. This album holds up to repeat listening, and is great for Browncoat singalongs.

  • You might not even realize that this music is about a Spaceship.
    author: Thomas Parisi

Surprisingly severial of my friends who are deeply into Folk music thought this album to have so great tunes when I played them at a recent get together, then I broke the news that the music was on based and inspired by the defunct Sci-Fi Series FireFly, they were shocked to say the least.

  • Take me to the Black
    author: C.J. Bowler

A beautiful collection of songs and instrumentals a stunning and fitting tribute to a too short-lived show, Joss would be proud. Can't stop the signal! When will we see the sequel to this delicious album because i want my big damn trillogy too!

  • Fantastic CD
    author: Lynn Laakso

This is a fatastic CD,whether you're a Firefly fan, filk fan or just love great music.Evberybody whose heard it agrees.More power to the Browncoats!!!!!

  • My precious...
    author: Elska J

I bought two copies of this CD: one was for my mom. We both think is great, though it could've been longer. But it's still shiny and worth the money!

  • Good music, fun lyrics, great for Firefly or Serenity fans!
    author: Freya

This CD incorporates parody, music from Firefly, and music inspired by Firefly in an enjoyable mix. Listening at work, I felt like I was out on a grassy knoll sitting around a fire listening with friends.

  • Music with real heart and passion
    author: Stevie B

I mainly ordered this album as a "Thank You" to the Bards for their efforts to keep the fans happy at "Flangate" but I must say I really enjoyed listening to this CD. It is music with real heart and passion, your love of the 'verse really shines through. I particularly loved "On the Drift" and the playful "Ballad of Joss". Keep up the good work guys!

  • Browncoat done right
    author: Goranden

On the Drift is an incredible tribute to the greatest creation in fiction. The artists' talent displayed and the love for Firefly and Serenity is clear whenever I listen to this album. Thank you Bedlam Bards and keep flyin'.

  • Wonderful tribute!
    author: Rebecca T

Fantastic CD! Great music, great concept. Thanks for giving Browncoats more theme songs!

  • Even if you don't know Firefly, the music is wonderful!
    author: TjinLOCA

I heard the music from this CD for the first time on the podcast "The Signal," and knew I had to own it. I have since bought it for two other people as gifts. I particularly love the instrumentals, especially the arrangement of Saffron's wedding tune. This is a "must have" CD for any fan of Firefly/Serenity, and I know plenty of people who don't even know about the show who still love the music!

  • Great CD - and not just for Firefly fans!
    author: Jamie

This is a great CD with some phenomenal music! Thanks Bards!! Not only did I love this CD, but my wife, who doesn't follow Firefly at all, was also able to totally get into it.

  • Wonderful CD!
    author: T

I was alerted to this group and this CD in particular throught the Signal podcast. So I liked what I heard, and I am so glad I bought it. Best songs on the album: River's Jig, Saffron's Wedding Dance, Leaf on the Wind and Sail the Sky. I can listen to those songs over and over again!

  • It's about time :)
    author: Sandy

I absolutely LOVED this CD! :) It's great to finally see some browncoat hard work paying off. Keep up the good work guys. They can never stop the signal. :)

  • Great Music! Helped convert more viewers!
    author: BDGroundHog

I heard the music on Firefly Talk and The Signal, and on Done the Impossible. After having a few friends of mine drive with me for a few hours on a road trip, I decided to ambush them with the CD. Next time we go camping, On the drift is gonna be one of our camp songs. Stay Shiney!

  • Great music for Browncoats
    author: SkepticScott

I enjoyed listening to this CD. It brought me back to when I was watching "Firefly" for the first time. Keep up the good work, Beadlam Bards!

Great CD. Leaf on the Wind makes me choke up a bit.

  • Everything's Shiny, Cap'n!
    author: Andrea

I loved this music when I first heard it performed live at the Dragon*Con Shindig in Atlanta. Immediately bought it when I got home and have been playing it ever since. Lovely voice, instrumentals: it's all beautiful. Any Browncoat can appreciate the work these fine bards have composed. :)

  • Bloody Brilliant!!
    author: Jack

This is one awesome CD. A truely great tribute to our much loved Firefly and Serenity!! All we're waiting for now is our Shiny Trilogy...

  • So Good It Deserves To Be Its Own Big Damn Trilogy
    author: Fraser

Not only does this album have serious appeal for Browncoats everywhere, but even if you know nothing about the 'Verse and you're just after some cunning, quality modern folk music, then look no further than On the Drift.

  • Go Browngoats!
    author: Michelle

This CD is a great way to remember Firefly on a daily basis. I love the reimaginings of songs such as "Saffron's Wedding Dance" but nothing gets my Browncoat juice going like "Big Damn Trilogy"! Stay Shiny and keep fighting the fight!

  • Ideal CD for every Browncoat
    author: Paul Tuck

A great album that evokes the rich, raw and gritty sounds of Firefly.

  • Captures the Spirit of Firefly
    author: Allura

This is a great cd for any Browncoat. I prefer the serious songs to the funny, but the mix is spot on.

  • Funny, touching, shiny!
    author: ConstantIrritant

The parodies were spot-on and hilarious, the original music was beautiful, and "A Leaf On The Wind" made me cry. Browncoats, arise and demand a trilogy - from the Bedlam Bards!

  • love it
    author: crone

Love the CD . Especially adore that last song...great song even if I wasn't a Firefly freak!! Well done, guys.

  • A must have for any Browncoat
    author: TJ

This is one Shiny CD!!! A must have for any Browncoat cruisin' this Big Damn Verse!!! It fits perfectly with the Firefly/Serenity CD's!! They did an awesome job on this! I can't even begin to tell ya'll how great this CD is.----SHINY, LET'S BE BAD GUY'S!

  • Shiny CD, really takes you back to the 'Verse
    author: Chuck and Mary Girven

My husband and I both love this CD because we're Firefly/Serenity fans who both want more of anything related to our favorite story. And this CD satisfies that desire. Even though it isn't of type of music either of us particularly likes, it is clear that the songs were written and performed with love by people who love the same things we do. The music and lyrics really get into your head and you want to listen to them over and over and over, just like the BDS and BDM. They fit right in. So we couldn't give this CD anything less than a 5.

  • Awesome music and an impressive fan effort.
    author: Jon May

Well as the title says, the CD is great. On the Drfit and Leaf on the Wind are my favorite tracks but i enjoy listenting to all of them. I also have to say that I really admire the Browncoat spirit that was put into this effort. I was really impressed. And if I can take a moment to give CD Baby a hand. Never have I had such a positive experience when ordering something online. Thier thoughtful service and customer friendly attitude was a welcome change from some of the other places I've done business with.

  • Makes me want to watch Firefly more than usual.
    author: Brett Vezzani

The pacing of the entire CD was great and all the music was spot-on. I was amazed at the accuracy of the covers as well as the creative lyrics. I'll be looking forward to being able to afford this band's other CDs.

  • shinicity
    author: Sam Storck-Post

'tis excellent, quite satisfactory. a nice assorment of songs, well performed (given that it is what it is), and a nice suplament to the serenity and firefly soundtracks.

  • Short and Shiny
    author: carla

I loved Firefly, I loved Serenity, obviously... I loved this CD. Good music, the covers of show incindentals was a great idea but I will admit that I would have wanted more filk about the show. More character songs, less 'please make more movies'. Maybe I should make a 'please make more CDs' song?

  • I'll be in my bunk....
    author: Robyn

...listening to my copy of On the Drift. The humor and insight of the musicians and writers is delightful and the influence of Firefly is unmistakable. True Browncoats to the black and beyond! This will be a gift in several people's stockings come December.

  • Shiny! This is a Big Damn CD!
    author: Mark Gorman

The music is a mix of genres that genuinely reflects the spirit of the Firefly TV show (now available on DVD).

  • Really grows on you
    author: Loren

This CD is completely in tune with the Firefly music style. It really does grow on you, even if you think that you don't like a song from the sample, it really grows upon further listening. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the music is still quite folksy and many people may not like that no matter how well done it is. Definitely a good CD

  • It's so dah bien-hwa
    author: JimmyBoy

I can't stop playing "On the Drift"! I love your sound (very distinctive) and the lyrics for "On the Drift", "Leaf on the Wind", and "Sail the Sky"... fabulous! You have captured the essence of why a movie like Serenity exists in the first place, it's visceral. Thanks!

  • Big Damn CD!
    author: Jonathan

What more can I say? Delivery was very fast (4 days to the UK) and the CD's excellent, my favourite being 'Leaf on the wind'. Only possible gripe was no lyrics on the inside, as this will definitely be one that you'd want to sing along with, but once you've listened to it a few times (which I'd guess would be on the day it arrives :-) you don't need them. Definitely recommend to Browncoats everywhere!

  • Shiny CD, must have!
    author: Mirth

Great songs, River's Jig makes you want to get up and dance lol. Excellent version of Hero of Canton. You have to listen to the words-The Theme Song for instance is really insteresting. I heard Cedric perform The Ballad of Joss at Dragon*Con last year; so I figured I'd like the album and I was right. I also liked Leaf on the Wind-it's a definite tribute to Wash and his warrior woman.

  • Keeps my flyin !!
    author: Flame

I am so glad I got this cd!!! The original songs and parodies are fantastic, and it's always great to have Hero of Canton playing...

  • Great fun!
    author: Jasmine

My husband and I both really enjoy this CD. It's obvious that the musicians are fans of both the show Firefly and it's movie Serenity. Their love comes through in the music, and its a love we both share. Anyway, my point is, we really enjoy this CD. Great work!

  • Loved the Joss takeoff on Jayne's song.
    author: Julia

Played it in my CD player on the way home from the post office box, and then again (that same morning) while taking the kids to school. Got rave reviews from the kids (teenagers) on the Joss takeoff on Jayne's song. I personally bought it for "Leaf on the Wind." Aaah. Nice CD. I have a huge filk collection, and this one rates up with my favorites.

  • Fantastic; Takes you straight back to the Verse
    author: wicca303

Love this CD, sing along loudly to the well known songs, and tap my foot to the ones i don't know. On The Drift (instrumental) is amazing it's my new chill out tune. Thanks Guys.

  • Well worth buying.
    author: Sarah

I see the Bedlam Bards at the Muskogee Renaissance Faire in Oklahoma every year. I had no idea they were Browncoats! I was very pleased with the CD. The songs inspired by music from the show such as the adaptation of River's Jig and Saffron's Wedding Dance are beautiful and wonderfully accurate. And the original songs are a terrific addition to the collection. I would recommend this CD to any Firefly or Serenity fan.

  • Wonderful addition to the 'verse
    author: Claire

On the Drift is a great way to get your fix of Firefly and Serenity. Splendidly evocative of the spirit of the series and the film. Favourite track is probably Saffron's Wedding Dance, based on the snippet of music which appears in the episode "Our Mrs Reynolds".

  • so shiny
    author: karenkay

I listened to it 3 times the first day and absolutely loved it. If you love Firefly, Serenity and Joss in general this is a must have!

  • A great CD
    author: Brent

A great CD with a mix of instrumentals and clever songs with some laugh-out-loud and others with more poignant lyrics for Firefly/Serenity fans. I bought a copy for every browncoat I know and they've all loved it.

  • Amazing CD, thank you guys!
    author: Sylvie

I got the CD a week or two ago and I must say I really enjoyed it. A must have for every browncoat of the world ( LOL )

  • BROWNCOATS UNITE!
    author: Tom

On the Drift is without a doubt one of the greatest albums I have had the pleasure of experiancing in quite some time. And that really what it is, an experiance. One as profound as the series that inspired it. Some folk might quibble over vocals and the like but this was obviously a labor of love, from the never-say-die hearts of true Browncoats. Tracks like The Ballad of Joss and Big Damn Trilogy had me laughing for a good long time. Of paticular interest for me were the On The Drift tracks, Both of which had me back on the familiar decks of a wounded Serenity, rooting for Mal to come through once again. Shiny boys. Shiny

  • great addition to the 'verse...satire and solidly good music
    author: Paula

I first heard Big Damn Trilogy on The Signal and thought this group needed a further listen so I went to the Bedlam Bards website and sampled the CD; the satirical slant in the vocals is inventive fun, but it is their musicianship on the instrumentals that impressed me the most; a great addition to the Firefly/Serenity verse.

  • One word: shiny!
    author: Evamaria

I'd heard the 'Ballad of Joss' and 'Big Damn Trilogy', thanks to The Signal, and really enjoyed them, so I decided to get the CD to feed my thirst for more 'Firefly'-related stuff... And I definitely don't regret it - the whole album is great! My favorite track is probably 'Sail the Sky', which I'd heard as a demo before. It's turned out wonderful! Most definitely worth the international postage. :)

  • The best filk CD I've ever bought
    author: Kendra

This album is pretty much a must for any Browncoat. I've never encountered filk music that so fully captured the feeling of the original work before. I had some reservations on one or two of the vocals on the first listen, but the instrumentals (especially The Rock Garden and On the Drift) really sold it for me, and after the second or third playthrough I started to enjoy the vocals, too. Sail the Sky and Leaf on the Wind bring tears to my eyes every time, and River's Jig makes me want to get up and dance. Then there's The Ballad of Joss, which is BRILLIANT, and Big Damn Trilogy, which was stuck in my head for days BEFORE the cd even got to me in the mail (aren't sample tracks wonderful?). I love it!!!

  • Grate songs
    author: Anthony

Grate songs there are all stuck in my head now! Thanks!

  • Shiny sing a long!
    author: Debbie

I got this shortly before driving from Houston, Tx to Tampa, Florida. I played Sail the Sky over and over and sang along to it. My dogs were gorram sick of it, but not me. I love this CD. I want more, we need songs about Kaylee and River and Simon and Morena. On Sail the Sky, I pictured Mal talking or Zoe (especially the first verse). Leaf on the Wind and Sail the Sky made me cry. Luckily, there's plenty of funny ones like the Ballad of Joss.

  • A musical safety blanket for Browncoats new and old
    author: Alun Lewis

After taking a listen to "On the Drift," I immediately fell back into the kinds of feelings I get when watching "Firefly." All the songs connected with me, but pieces like "Ballad of Joss," "Big Damn Trilogy" and "Theme Song Parody" really brought it home for me. Only reason why I didn't give it a 5 is that while every song spoke to me in some way, I did feel some vocal missteps. Still...an excellent composition!

  • Damn Close to greatness
    author: Roy

This is a fine work lovingly dedicated and inspired by Joss Weadon's Firefly. The "comic" songs "Ballad of Joss" and "Trilogy" are inspired. The weakest song of the bunch is "On the Drift." Specifically the non-instrumental version. The singers voice is ...just not the way to go for this song. The rest of the songs are fabulous and well worth the cd. All in all, I would give this album a 4.999999....it just misses by the narowist of margins

  • Addictive
    author: Sparky

When you first listen to some of the instrumental tracks you might be taken aback by the sounds. But they are Firefly style, and after hearing them one more time I find myself coming back to them. The mournful on the drift is great. I'm committing the words to memory, enough said.

  • Love firefly, love music, then this is for you.
    author: Jason

I love firefly, I loved the music, and I love this music too. Great for any Browncoat or just fan of Firefly, and probably even for anyone who likes this style of music.

  • WOW
    author: Kenny

This CD is SHINY.. a great addition to the Firefly/Serenity verse.

  • Just what I was hankerin' after! Dong ma?
    author: Cathy "Cat" Hicks

Great music for the car sterio, a drive-along sing-along must! Hoping "Bedlam Bards" give us more just like it soon, please?

  • Enjoyable CD for any browncoat. Glad I bought it.
    author: rosemary

After hearing about this CD from various Browncoats I finally got a hold of it. It's a really nice tribo Firefly with some nice tracks, and also some very funny ones. It's a great addition to my firefly collection.

  • Best. Album. Ever.
    author: Tenth CrewMember

If you are a fan of Firefly or Serenity, or even a fan of just well written, catchy tunes with a memorable score, you will order a copy of this CD. I expected it would have that "one tune I heard and maybe one or two more I'll like..." but I enjoyed the entire album from the first note to the last. Every tune invokes visions in my mind's eye about the show, the BDM, and time spent with fellow Browncoats. To listen to the album is to get a sense of "they wrote this just for me", and very few albums ever have that calling.

  • The hairs on my neck stood up from the first chords
author: Mim on the Rim, Australia

From the opening chords of The Ballad of Joss I felt transported back to the verse. I am so happy I have yet another Firefly related goodie to add to my collection and to share with my fellow Browncoats. Incredibly prompt delivery too to Western Queensland, Australia

  • Shiny and fun! Great stuff!
    author: Simon Bleaken

This CD is an amazing collection of music inspired by Serenity and Firefly. It's fun, beautiful, touching and has some amazingly catchy songs that capture the feel and essence of Firefly prefectly! A must for all Browncoats! You won't be disappointed!

  • Great CD . . .Ain't it Just!
    author: Shan

I saw a reference to this CD on Fireflyfans.net and had to drop over to CD baby to check it out. After hearing the clip of the the first few songs, I was thinking, this would be real great to have and then I heard Trilogy, and went to the shopping cart. This is soooo Shiny!!! I have already addicted two people to the CD and they should be purchasing copies soon. Well put together and completely captures all of the Hi-larious, Wacky Fun of the Verse'. My Jayne hat is off the the Bedlam Bards!!!!!

  • Too pretty to die!
    author: Orlando Rob

An absolute must, this CD is wonderful fun for Browncoats, Filkers and the like.

  • This was a great CD!

The CD is Fantastic, I laughed so hard at the Joss takeoff and the rest are just fantastic...Thanks to my friends who are also Firefly fanatics who recommended it!

  • A Browncoat Must, True to the Show
    author: Lily Clairwell

This is a great CD. There's a healthy mix of singing and instrumental. The music really captures the feel of the show and is a Browncoat must. The lead singer has a bit of a harsh voice, but I feel that's appropriate in this case. However, the music that is "expanded" upon from the show is more like taking the little snippets of music that was given in the show and repeating it over and over... there really isn't much originality in those pieces.

  • Gorram Shiny!!!!
    author: Bob-san

I give this 5 stars only because the site's ratings go no higher! ^_^ An amazing collection of music, this CD sould be purchased by all Browncoats. Not only do we get a chance to hear our favorites like The ballad of Joss and Trilogy, but we get their new song On the Drift, a parody of the Theme Song, and a re-play of the fan song, Leaf on the Wind. Even the non-vocal tracks are amazing and well played. The instumental music really captures the feel of Firefly and Serenity. All in all, a highly recommended CD!!!

  • True to the spirit of the fans and the show
    author: Suze

Clever, sing-a-long ditties mixed with lovely instrumental pieces. A must-have for any fan of the series!

  • Shiny!
    author: Stephanie P

The CD was too short- but I guess Bedlam Bards will just have to produce another CD! ; D (It's that enjoyable.)

  • Shiny cd! It really captures the firefly verse's music
    author: Brianne

I love this cd! Leaf on the Wind is a great tribute to Wash's life and I could listen to Sail the Sky all day. The instrumental versions of songs from the series are very shiny. You Can't Stop the Signal!

  • Love this cd!
    author: Hadley

I love this cd - the lyrics and music are so addicting! It definetly is a great representation of the music of Firefly and Serenity!

  • SHINY CD! I hope Joss has a copy!
    author: Raelene

The CD is great! Thank you so much for putting in so much effort! I hope that all the cast members and Joss have a copy (I volunteer to help diffray the costs to send copies to Fox or anyone else who might pick up the show). I love it! The music is awesome and what a wonderful tribute to our Big Damn Heroes!

  • for Big Damn Browncoats...
    author: Lynn C.

...by Big Damn Browncoats, aka as the Bedlam Bards...what a tribute. The parodies are hilarious, their renditions are inspired...and the pure instrumentals take me out to the black. My favorite pieces are not the parodies, not the tributes, but two original instrumental pieces - Paquin Rendezvous and Eavesdown Docks. I hear these two songs, and feel that I'm on some non-core planet, untouched by Unification...browsing through the marketplace, dancing about a campfire. The Bedlam Bard's tribute to the 'verse proves Mr. Universe's adage - can't fight the signal!

  • This cd rocks!
    author: coffey

I've had this cd in my truck now since the day it came in - I've even played it once or twice!! Seriously, it hasn't been out of my cdplayer for the last couple of weeks! I love the instrumental pieces the most, they are riveting and haunting in all the best places.

  • Excellent
    author: Michael Baker

"On the Drift" is an essential purchase for any Browncoat. Fine, fun music that captures the feel of Firefly and Serenity's soundtrack. All of the tracks are great but "Saffron's Wedding Dance", "On the Drift", and "Sail the Sky" especially stand out.

  • Gorramit! It's Awesome!
    author: JAC

Loved the single, "On the Drift". This CD is a must for anyone who likes Firefly. Some may complain about vocals or other little things, but it is obvious to me that these songs are from the hearts of people who love Firefly. It does not get any better than that. Keep up the great work!

  • Cool! I was really needing some more of this sound!
    author: Bill

I really loved the instrumentals. They made me feel like I was in the 'Verse. "Eavesdown Docks", "River's Jig", and "On The Drift (Instrumental)" are outstanding. It was also very nice to finally get a recording of Hero of Canton. I've had them in my head for a while - they just won't leave! I have to say that "Leaf on the Wind" darn near made me cry. It is a wonderful tribute to Wash. I really, really liked it. Oh, the rest are all good too, but these are the standouts for me. You'll enjoy it. Music that tells a story. How cool is that?

  • Truely inspired music
    author: shinko0278

This CD is so shiny. The songs go well with Firefly & Serenity. The blend of the music styles is just perfect.

  • awsomely shiny cd
    author: geraline k. james

this is one of the best awsomely shiny cds Ive listend to..love all the beautiful instrumentals...the mood of firefly/serentity is there perfectly...how much more than I loved it..super shiny guys thanks..Gerry James the Crew Chief

  • perfect instrumentals, vocals = ok
    author: Erin

I have to agree with previous reviewers who loved the instrumentals but weren't as crazy about the vocals. The Ballad of Joss was cute. However, I'm not a big filk fan, so some of the other songs eventually prompted me to hit the skip button. That said, the instrumentals were wonderful - they captured the spirit and feel of Firefly perfectly. Yep, definitely shiny.

  • Plot bunnies ahoy!
    author: Katie

I've been listening to this CD just about non-stop for the past couple weeks. Both 'On The Drift' songs have decided to adopt a couple of my plot bunnies at the theme songs for said bunnies.

  • Loved the instrumentals
    author: Ivory Hilliard

The instrumentals rocked and I really loved the "Hero of Canton" and "The Ballad of Joss". The only thing that wasn't so shiny about this CD was some of the vocals. They were still pretty good, but the guys are obviously better instrumentalists.

  • Great instrumental pieces
    author: Hansel

I love the instrumental pieces on this CD. They've done a great job of capturing the Firefly mood, and the songs are played with enthusiasm. They certainly captured the western/chinese feeling with their instruments. "Rivers Jig" might be my favourite. The other half of this CD is vocal/instrumental pieces, which are done with enthusiasm, but are less interesting to me. Many of them are done in the filk music style, which I don't mind listening to once for their novelty value, but I doubt I'll be returning to them. Not that they are bad, it's just not my style of music. Overall, I'd give this CD 3.5 stars out of 5, but I have no problem rounding that up to 4.

  • Amazing!
    author: Dan M

I love this CD. These guys have done a great job with bringing to life the music of Firefly and Serenity. This is a definate must for every Browncoat to have.

  • Its all good.
    author: RRDelisle

Most CDs have a few good songs (if you're lucky) and then a lot of fillers. Not this one. Its all good. There is a nice mix of balads, anthems, old favorites and instrumentals. And not a single clinker!! I have listened to the CD at least a dozen times since I bought it and I'm still not tired of it! My only regret is no lyrics are included.

  • Shiny stuff!!
    author: DarkJester

I am a Browncoat, and I bought this album because of the subject matter, and WOW! The Bards nailed it! The feel, the sound..... They do the 'verse proud!

  • Wow!

Great tribute to the series! Love the songs and the inspiring background music! A must-have for browncoats everywhere!

  • The Best DAMN CD IN the Verse
    author: washi

This CD is soo Good it is hard to describe it in mere words. The only one that even comes close is SHINY!!!! If you a re a Browncoat you need this CD. The Sail the shy song almost brought tears to my eyes and the bards have captured the heart of what is like to be in the verse.

  • This cd has a solid reputation!
    author: Fiction

this is a brilliant cd! It is a must have for all browncoats! Beautiful, haunting, fun, and all round nifty!

  • Absolutely love it!

I absolutely love this CD. The music fits very well into the Firelfy 'verse and it's super catchy. =) I have to watch myself so I don't accidentally starting singing out loud on the bus...

  • Songs that Every Browncoat Needs to Own
    author: Bill Howell

I heard an interview with the Bedlam Bards on The Signal podcast and have been waiting with baited breath for the CD to finally be released. But it was worth the wait. Excellent music, similiar to the band TEMPEST, but with wonderful Browncoat lyrics. If you're a fan of Firefly and Serenity, this CD is a must-have.

After hearing "Ballad of Joss" and "Big Damn Trilogy" on the web and learning that there was an entire CD with "Firefly"/"Serenity"-inspired music by the Bedlam Bards I knew that I absolutely HAD to get my hands on this disc. Thanks to CD Baby's nice and quick service, the CD was delivered fast and safe, and what a great CD it is! Great songs to sing along at shindigs plus some very fine versions of themes that were not on the official soundtrack to the "Firefly" series. The songs are recorded very professionally . It's a MUST HAVE for all "Browncoats".

  • A delightful CD and a lovely experience.
    author: S. Hilliard

It's efforts like this that truly make one appreciate the breadth and the scope of Firefly's delightful influence. The original ballads carry the same big heart and infectious character that the show embodied, and the instrumental sections could have been plunked into the show and fit perfectly with the original score. A definite must-have for any Browncoat, and I unabashedly guarantee it will be impossible to keep from humming the tune to "Sail the Sky". Also a note to new CDBaby buyers... as a new buyer myself, I was met with prompt, thorough, and very polite service, and I would definitely recommend and buy from again. A joy to deal with, and a treat to listen to.

  • Blew away my expectations
    author: Tom Sinclair

This album is a wonderful mix of styles that range from laugh-out-loud funny to hauntingly lyrical. This, of course, captures the spirit of the show and the film and is a tremendous treat for the Browncoat community. If you don't have this album yet, run out and get it. You won't be disappointed.

  • Great CD!
    author: Chad Walker

I first heard the two free songs and of course loved them immediately, being a big Browncoat. I couldn't wait to get the CD and bought it as soonas I found out it was out. It's great! There are humorous songs, serious songs, and instrumentals that sound like they belong on the show. A well put together CD, well worth the money.

  • Shiny!
    author: Greta

This CD is so great....it puts a smile on my face every time I put it on. I makes me feel like I'm watching the show or movie. It's also proof that there are so many other devoted Browncoats out there just like me.

  • Awesome CD!
    author: Theresa

It's got all the missing pieces of the Firefly CD and more! I just loved Saffrons song and on the drift. Original songs that so capture firefly's soul.

  • Whoa. Good CD.
    author: Sue R.

Can't keep this out of my CD player in the car....it just magically finds its way in there, and the only thing that keeps it kicked out for long is the original Firefly soundtrack (which this CD is an excellent companion to!). The songs on On The Drift are perfectly suited for the Serenifly 'verse, sounding as if they were written by The Sons of Greg Edmonson. The instrumentals are wonderful, and make you imagine you can see River dancing to them; Leaf on the Wind is a fun song but makes me get a little teary eyed every time I hear it; Sail the Sky has GOT to become the official "Browncoat Choir" song for cons from now on....just beautiful. And the haunting On The Drift....wow. It's all good, and just too damn pretty to die.....you guys are official Big Damn Heroes!!!

  • Just like Firefly: Funny, haunting, addictive, and full of stringed instruments.
    author: C. A. Bridges

What you’ll get will be something that just feels like Firefly: Funny, haunting, addictive, and full of stringed instruments. You’ll smile to hear the Ballad of Joss again (I dare you not to sing along with the chorus) but you’ll laugh out loud with the theme song parody and Big Damn Trilogy and you’ll have a wistful smile during Leaf on the Wind. Tributes to the show’s music pop up in Saffron’s Wedding Dance and River’s Jig, and songs like Paquin’s Rendezvous and Eavesdown Docks are reminiscent of some of Greg Edmondson’s wonderful music that didn’t make it to the soundtrack. The Bards’ version of Hero of Canton is the way the mudders sang around a campfire (mudfire?), and the tune seems to have inspired the delicate instrumental piece The Rock Garden which really should be longer than it is, just because I don’t want it to end so quickly. Finally, there are two songs that catch your attention through sheer emotion. On the Drift captures Mal’s thoughts while trapped on a drifting Serenity, and Sail the Sky is for Browncoats everywhere.

  • Shiney! Bedlam Bards + Firefly = Excellence
    author: Renaissance Festival Podcast

When I first heard "Ballad of Joss", I was dying to hear if the Bedlam Bards would release a full album of Firefly music. Lo and behold, they did. And what a brilliant job they did. To paraphrase one of their own songs. This CD is meaningful and witty and the songs are really pretty. Great job, Bedlam Bards!

  • A Must for Any Browncoat!
    author: Celtic MP3s Music Magazine

If you have to ask what Firefly and Serenity are, you might not be in the inner circle of fans (referred to as Browncoats), but it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy this CD. Firefly was a Sci-Fi television show that garnered quite a following of viewers in its short run, even inspiring a movie, Serenity. The band members (Bedlam Bards) were less than pleased that it was canceled, and decided to do a CD lamenting the loss of their beloved show. Never having seen the show myself, I wasn't sure if I would even like this CD, but the musicianship is expert, and although I am sure being a fan of Firefly would give the songs more meaning, they were still a really good listen. If anything, it makes me want to at least check out an episode . . . see for yourself, here is a lyric sample: Now, here is what separates Firefly > From other shows you're likely to see: It's meaningful and witty, and the setting's really gritty, And the theme song's about Serenity. Its a little like a western, (hyah!) And a little like X-Files, Its better than Trek, and it's funnier than Shrek, And it beats out Andromeda by miles! The CD has a fun parody of the theme song, some terrific instrumental tracks (including a darn good jig), as well as many clever songs reflecting on the show. Fans of Firefly who have not heard this simply must. And those who have not? Since I am one who is not yet a Browncoat, I can tell you to check it out anyway, its fun!

  • SHINY!
    author: Caitlin

After listening to this I am convinced the Bards aren't really from Texas, but from some little moon on the Rim. Paquin Rendezvous, Eavesdown Docks, and The Rock Garden captured the universe of Firefly/Serenity perfectly. I loved hearing familiar songs from the show, such as Saffron's Wedding Dance, Hero of Canton, and River's Jig. The album was a perfect mix of humor and beauty (the two things I love most about the Bards music). I loved the Theme Song Parody (I had actually forgotten the reason I watched John Doe was that it followed Firefly). On the Drift was even more beautiful then I remember and I loved the inclusion of an instrumental version as well. The biggest surprise was Leaf on the Wind. I don't think I've ever listened to a song that made me both laugh out loud and tear up. It was a great surprise and a perfect tribute to Wash. In conclusion, it doesn't matter if you're a Bedhead or a Browncoat, you need this album! Buy many, many copies.

  • Fantastic - a must for all Browncoats
    author: Susan

This album captures the essence of Firefly magnificently. It makes you laugh, makes you cry and touches your heart. As the final notes of “Sail the Sky” play, you feel like you’ve been on a journey well worth taking. The wit and great music of tracks like “The Ballad of Joss” and “Big Damn Trilogy” make you want to laugh and sing along. “Leaf on the Wind” brings Wash’s character vividly to mind and is a fitting tribute to a great guy. As for the “On the Drift” track, it alone is worth the price of the CD. Fantastic.

  • author: Glo

Playing On the Drift cd with my Firefly/Serenity dvd's at the same time, Does life get any better? I think not! It is one awesome cd! Thanks to everyone involved!

  • Excellent Tribute to the Series
    author: Tony

I am quite pleased with this CD. the songs capture everything anyone can remember about the show, the humor, the love, the adventure. The instrumental songs are quite upbeat and fun to listen to. The song On the Drift is the story about the episode of the same name and is probably my favorite song on the CD. I would defintely recommend this CD to any fan of the TV show and move and any fan of the Bards would enjoy this CD as well.
