Album Notes

Stolen Heart represents a maturing and refining of the sound of the band. The arrangements are sonically full and dynamically diverse. each of the band members has his or her opportunity to shine and the album has a well put together feel. There are some humorous moments and great cover art.

Beggars' Circus performs the traditional music of Scotland Ireland, Wales, Brittany and Galacia. Known for seamless arrangements, high energy stage shows and a dark sense of humor, this band favors obscure selections in their repertoire which spans some 800 years of musical tradition.

The band is made up of multi-instrumentalists Michelle Lawrence-Walker on flute, pennywhistle, concertina, hammered dulcimer and vocals and Tim Summers on Guitar, bouzouki, pennywhistle, flute, bagpipes and vocals along with fine fiddler and vocalist Mary Beth Coffey.

Beggars' Circus' song choices are mostly of the less than cheerful variety. Commenting on the hardships of the human (and less than human) condition they are at time performed with grim humorous irony, often in earnest consideration of the subject matter.

The band's tune sets inspire dancing and impress the listener with some very fine insrumental work. Well known tunes are interspersed with more unusual numbers and arranged to keep things moving along at a slick pace.

Beggars' Circus have received air play in the Virginia, DC and North Carolina areas and have been featured a number of times on WBRA TV in Roanoke, VA on that station's live music showcase. They were recently interviewed on WVTF's Studio Virginia program. The Beggars also played live on WETS public radio in Johnson City Tenn. as part of the Sycamore Shoals Celtic Festival.

REVIEWS

Recapturing the Moment
author: Murph
I don't do reviews, but this time, I had to say something. I got to see Beggar's Circus live last night. I've seen them before so I suppose that makes this something of a love story. I picked up "Stolen Heart" last night and listened to it this morning. It brought every feeling back. The power of the music reached somewhere into my soul and ancestry to awaken the joy that I felt listening to them last night. I can't describe it to you, I don't have the words... I will tell you this: If your heart is perpetually wandering in the history of those Isles, if you dream of being there instead of where you are, play "Stolen Heart" and let it carry you to your heart's home.

Darker Times

Beggars’ Circus third music album, “Stolen Heart,” is one to cherish. The CD, with fourteen diverse tracks, samples the dark Celtic times past where people passed their stories down through song. Beggars’ Circus is composed of a trio of talented musicians who take turns shining on each track. From Coffey’s winsome fiddle and Lawrence-Walkers’ unstoppable whistles and flutes to Summers driving guitar and percussive instruments, the band draws the listener into another time and place. “Stolen Heart” is quite an achievement for this small band from Southwest Virginia. A record not to be overlooked.
