Belinda Butler is slightly left of country, a step over from folk, and not too far from the just-pulled-out-of-the-ground roots of the blues. Honest, sassy and slightly quirky, her songs are shaped by a seriously good voice that alternately shimmers and powers to the heart of things.
Raised on a cattle station in Far North Queensland Belinda Butler has been treading the boards both here in Australia and in North America for the past few years attracting rave reviews for her performances at showcases and festivals.
With the forthcoming release of her debut self-titled EP, Butler is set to fulfill the expectations of the industry hotshots who have predicted a bright future for the talented singer/songwriter.
Recorded predominantly at The Valley in New South Wales' Blue Mountains and produced by Roger Corbett (The Bushwackers) 'Belinda Butler' features a plethora of first-rate musicians including Mitch Farmer (Lee Kernaghan, Troy Cassar-Daley) on drums, Ian Lees (Moving Pictures) on bass, Mark Punch (Kasey Chambers, Wendy Matthews) on guitar, Kirk Lorange on slide guitar and long time music partner, Lance Galloway (Phil Emmanuel) on harmonies and mandolin.
Critically acclaimed vocalist Jane Saunders co-wrote and contributed vocals to 'Woman Inside The Girl', "a mother-daughter song about the generation difference and opting for travelling, career and freedom before the traditional role."
Featuring 6 tracks (all written or co-written by Belinda Butler) the EP blends elements of country, folk and pop into a style that is uniquely Belinda Butler.
Particularly poignant is the quirky, guitar laden 'Inner World' which showcases Butler's ability to write infectious, melodic songs with a strong message. "'Inner World' is a song about a lot of issues that were on my mind," she explains. "It talks about the way we advertise, women, the environment and how there are all sorts of poisons out there infiltrating all areas of life - what we see, what we're told, what we are exposed to mentally, physically and emotionally and to find our way spiritually by turning inward."
But it's not all about messages - songs such as 'You Know I'm There' and the 'Microwave Oven' (featuring the unique slide guitar work of Kirk Lorange) touch on the lighter side of relationships. "Both of these songs portray relationships in a fun, but sensual light. Meaningful, but keeping the fun," says Belinda "On the other hand 'Last Resort' is a complete flip side of this - a darker view from the remnants of a love gone wrong. It's also a person recognizing where they were vulnerable and becoming stronger for it."
