Album Notes

Ben Bowen King is receiving a national reputation for his revival of pre WWII gospel guitar. The Village Voice said of his debut CD, "Sidewalk Saints": "King's guitar playing is an antidote to the 'dumbing down' of gospel instrumentals.

USA TODAY said: "King's guitar brings back the soulful sound of pre-WWII gospel music."

On his latest release, "A Laying On Of Songs," King re-creates the practice of friends circling a depressed or sick friend and performing classic American hymns.

On this release King uses a steel-string guitar tuned in the "open" "preacher tuning" favored by circuit riding preachers during the 1930s.

The melodies, which are all almost over 100 years old, have become so much a part of America's spiritual DNA that their melodies and harmonies bring a sense of grace that promise everything will be all right "in the sweet by & by."
