Album Notes

"...with much of what oozes out on the airwaves these days smothered in a smooth, sticky sweetness that requires that you periodically hose down yer speakers at the car wash, it's mighty refreshing to come across a rough-cut gem with the unadorned spunk of this sweaty, back-porch romp. On "Sucker Punched,"...singer/songwriter Ben Eaton... caterwauls and careens through 10 original tunes, his own guitar and harmonica accompanied by a joyfully honking collection of area musicians.
...Eaton clearly draws his inspiration from vintage, pre-rock'n'roll era touchstones-in Eaton's case, we're talkin' about an impressive sprawl that includes the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, Woody Guthrie. Mississippi John Hurt, Hank Williams and Muddy Waters.
...Eaton's vocal delivery is a languid, drawling backwoods style that often conjures a more blues-oriented (and bone-weary) Jerry Lee Lewis, and his broke-down tales speak of experience that's...beyond his years.
Suitably, the core band - guitarists Ruairi Fennessy (who also contributes a tune) and Dustin Busch, drummer Pat Lake and multi-instrumentalist/co-producer Andrew Brockman -couches the proceedings in a skunky, junk-trap/chickenshack racket that fits the tunes like off-the-rack overalls..."
