Album Notes

"Ben...will be making an impact in the millennium as one of the more gifted composers and pianists of his generation" - James Williams, CBS/Sony Recording Artist

"It's nice to play with a pianist who approaches the chord from the inside out" - Rachelle Farrell

"He's smoking" - Isaac Hayes

"Ben Flint is a talented artist who has paid his dues. He was a highly regarded sideman for many years. Many artists complete apprenticeships with musical geniuses before leading their own band. Ben attended Berklee College of Music and had played with Isaac Hayes for over a decade before releasing Onyx. The album has its share of highlights to make any jazz fan fall into a euphoric state." Jazz Now Magazine-September 1999

Evocative, thoughtful, and intelligent are only a few words to describe Jazz Pianist, Composer, and Clinician Ben Flint. Growing up near Memphis, Tennessee, he became excited by Jazz, Blues, and Gospel Music. While still attending high school, Ben began performing professionally all over the Memphis Area. Upon graduation, he attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music on full scholarship.
At Berklee, he had the pleasure of playing with Greg Osby, Terri Lynn Carrington, and Delfayo Marsalis. By his second year in college, Ben was featured on the Lomo Records release, "No Strings Attached". Subsequently, this opened the door for him to perform on two more records on Lomo: "Joseph's Path", and "Bakatak".
After completing his degree at Berklee College of Music, he returned to the South to resume his music career. Ben began conducting music productions and teaching at the University of Memphis. While in Memphis, he landed a keyboardist position with Isaac Hayes.
Working with Isaac afforded Ben the opportunity to travel to Australia, Europe, The Middle East, and all over the United States. Ben has also appeared with Mr. Hayes on television shows that have aired on HBO, VH1, and Comedy Central. He has also performed at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, as well as the Montreal and Brazil's Free Jazz festivals.
In addition to touring and performing, Ben also composes. In 1999, He released a full-length CD entitled "Onyx". "Onyx" is a collection of contemporary jazz songs that evoke a new era in mainstream Jazz.
In addition to touring and performing, Ben also teaches. He holds a Master's degree from The Univerisity of Southern California (USC). Ben has been a faculty member at San Francisco State University, Santa Rosa Junior College, and Laney Community College. Ben is currently a faculty member at College of Alameda and performing all over the San Francisco Bay Area.

REVIEWS

A true gem in the rocky landscape of modern jazz fusion.

ONYX - Eleven tracks of diversity that somehow works together. Rather than taking us through a wild range of time feels and sounds for sound's sake, keyboardist/composer Ben Flint tells a story with this CD album. In fact every song seems to tell a small story of it's own, and the collection makes for a wonderful journey. With terrific artistic support from guitarist and co-producer Gerard Harris, drummers Tony Reedus, Ben Leinbach, Bo Harris and Tom Branch, percussionist Milton Comeaux, bassists Errol Thomas, Joey Moore, Geoff Brennan, Jonathan Wires and Keith Franklin, trumpet player Scott Thompson, and vocalist Joyce Cobb, this disc is a wealth of talent, good grooves and smooth changes that is sure to please.
