Album Notes

Deceptively simple and damn catchy, The Ben Gunn Society's songs are a blend of indie-pop and folk-rock with a touch of psychedelia and world music, informed by the romantic images of the sea from books and classic movies.

The six tracks on No Stars offer subtle commentary on history, human nature, and current events, tied together by a loose pirate metaphor.

The EP opens with "Captain Flint," a bright and cheerful ode to the classics. "The Wicked Smile" reminds us that the map is useless if you don't know where you're going, while "Treasure" weighs the romance of pirate life against the questionable values of civilized society.

"The Shipwrecked Sailor" is based on Gabriel Garcia Marquez's treatment of the true account of a sailor who was lost at sea.

"The Last Pirates" is a prophecy of the fate that awaits humanity when there is nothing left on Earth to pillage.

The album closes with the super groovy title track inspired by Joss Whedon's series Firefly. A metaphor for self-exploration, this journey remains hopeful even as we face the unknown.
