Album Notes

notes on Aquarium: the late great Los Angeles poet Steven Jessie Bernstein wrote a poem about a waterless aquarium in his apartment. It was full of dust, candy wrappers, melted army men, dead flies, etc., and he wrote the line "everything dies in there". The closeness of that small, bleak world in miniature inspired me to write the song Aquarium. My imagined aquarium is a place of escape, not a metaphor for alcoholism which has been suggested. It is simply about a depressed individual, pondering the world of his fish tank, and how nice it would be to disappear down into it, to live alongside the plastic diver and treasure chest, and find sanctuary in the dark confines of the little cave with its patch of plastic seaweed.
