I bought two discs by Berretin - Tangomente and this one. In spite of the smaller number of tangos, I do prefer to listen to this one. In fact, it is the second week that I play this disc at least once a day. It is impossible to get tired of it: uplifting, fresh interpretations which put you in a mood to dance...

Conjunto Berretín is Portland's local tango band, and all the energy of at the milongas where they play is captured in this recording.  The style is "a la parilla"-- improvised, like the Argentine tango itself-- so don't expect a tight, overpolished, overproduced studio sound.  This is tango with corazón.  And unlike a lot of live tango bands, this is very danceable-- not surprising, since most of the band members are also tango addicts themselves.  My only lament is that it would be great to have more songs on the album.  The profits are going for a good cause, too, so not only will you be getting great music, you'll feel good about choosing this CD.

I bought this CD based solely on hearing _Desde el alma_ on http://batanga.com.  As satisfying as playing that recording over and over again is, though, I'm finding that the track which haunts me most at present is the Conjunto's version of _Youkali_.  Risa Rank sings Kurt Weill's tune in a pleasing alto, and the arrangement permits a danceable beat. 

The production is excellent:  you can listen to every track on this CD on headphones without wincing with some unexpected high frequencies.

Purists may dislike some departures from Argentine tango canon, such as the harmonica on _Desde el alma_, or the brief R&B-flavored flourish in _Nueve de julio_.
