"More Songs About Robots & Death" displays the lighter side of Minneapolis-based "geek-rock" band Beth Kinderman & the Player Characters. Where their first record, "All Of My Heroes Are Villains," blended confessional singer-songwriter fare with a hard edge, and its follow-up, "Apocalypse Blues," was a progressive rock sci-fi epic, "More Songs About Robots & Death" showcases the band's sense of humor and love for unexpected covers. Four of the album's eight songs are covers of songs by David Bowie, Peter Schilling, Led Zeppelin, and Talking Heads given a quirky spin with spacy guitars, propulsive drums, and harmonious female vocals. The remaining four songs are Beth Kinderman's originals and deal humorously with topics ranging from the zombie apocalypse to complaining about TV shows to bad fanfiction to the difficulties inherent in attempting to sleep with an imaginary video game character. Fun, silly, weird, and surprising from beginning to end.
