notes

Beth Waters is a performing singer/songwriter/pianist from San Francisco, California. In the upcoming March/April 2004 issue of Performing Songwriter, Clay Steakley reviews Waters' new, self-titled album.

He writes, "These songs glimmer like a glass of red wine in candlelight. They're dark, rich and whisperingly intimate. A virtuosic blend of moody Tori Amos piano work and Sarah McLachlan harmony bending, Waters' self-titled release is startling in its depth of texture and lyric...Waters has a firm grasp on the power in the dynamics of her playing and the close, secretive delivery of her vocals."

The album is already attracting the attention the entertainment industry and press. "Sweaters," the lead track from Waters' new album, was recently featured in its entirety on an episode of Lifetime Television's drama "1-800-Missing." Waters' song "Sweaters" was also honored as the DIY Song of the Year at the DIY Music Festival, February 5th 2004 at the legendary Derby nightclub in Hollywood, CA.

San Francisco radio station KFOG 104.5 FM has been playing "Sweaters" to great response, and picked Beth to perform with her band for a special KFOG 5th Sunday concert series, hosted by Rosalie Howarth of KFOG's Acoustic Sunrise show. This acoustic performance at San Francisco hotspot Slim's on February 29th, 2004 pairs Beth with the Stereophonics, a special show exclusively for KFOG contest winners.

Another song from Waters' new album, "Blue and White," was featured in an episode of The WB Network's "One Tree Hill." Waters was featured in the November 2003 issue of Jane Magazine, the Nov/Dec 2003 issue of Women Who Rock Magazine and the Winter 2003 issue of Independent Musician Magazine. Waters' song "Sweaters" was published in, "New Songs For Peace," an official United Nations program.

Waters has also performed live at such notable venues as The Chronicle Pavilion (Concord, CA) opening for Savage Garden, The Roxy (Los Angeles CA), The Derby (Hollywood CA), Café Du Nord (San Francisco CA) as well as a special performance for the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in San Francisco. Beth was also a finalist in Billboard Magazine's Independent Music World Series held in January 2004 at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles.

Produced by Michael Winger (Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips), "Beth Waters" the album is collection of twelve songs with delicately blended piano, voice, acoustic and electronic elements into a warm spacious sound. Waters appropriately self-titles this album because of the lyrical content. "This CD has it all: outstanding vocals, exceptional musicianship, intelligent lyrics and gives the listener an all around wonderful feeling." Amy Lotsberg, CollectedSounds.com.

The album features drumming by Ben Mize from The Counting Crows, is mixed by Joel Jaffe at the famed "Studio D" (Sausalito, CA) and was mastered at "The Plant Mastering Studio" (Sausalito, CA) by John Cuniberti.

"Beth Waters" will be distributed to retail stores nationally by Burnside Distribution Company beginning in March 2004. Beth will tour throughout the Western U.S. and Canada to support her album during 2004.

  • Beth's voice and particularly her first 4 songs blow me away!
    author: jblittle

The first four songs on this CD blow me away! These are the more richly-produced songs on the CD, and their production values are noticeably better than for the remaining songs on the CD. These are pop songs reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan (even Beth’s voice is similar to Sarah’s but smoother). Beth’s gorgeous voice injects emotion and beauty into these songs, hooking you from the second you start the CD player. The remaining songs on the CD are powered mostly by piano, and the transition to these songs is a little abrupt. I would have preferred the first four tracks to have been mixed in with the other tracks rather than isolated at the beginning. But this is a minor complaint. “Don’t Look Back,” “Cowardly Lion,” and “Needing to Be True” are standouts from the balance of the CD. These are slower-tempo songs that grip you with their passion. Again, the beauty of Beth’s voice carries you through each of these songs and infuses them with the emotion that draws you into each one. The quality of the songs on this CD are not as consistent as on her follow up CD “Beth Waters,” but even the few I would mark down are still enjoyable. And the seven songs I’ve highlighted here are so good that by themselves that they deserve the 5-star rating I’ve given this CD. The CD leaves you wanting more from Beth Waters. Luckily, she has a great second CD, “Beth Waters.” Now I just can’t wait for a third…..

Songs drip with emotion. You can feel her pain, joy, etc. I can't wait for her next release. Don't tell her but I'll buy it regardless of the price.
