notes

Beth Waters is a performing singer/songwriter/pianist from San Francisco, California. Waters released her second full-length album, "Beth Waters", nationally in March 2004.

Produced by Michael Winger (Tim Bluhm of The Mother Hips), the album is collection of twelve songs with delicately blend piano, voice, acoustic and electronic elements into a warm spacious sound. Waters appropriately self-titles this album because of the lyrical content.

The album features drumming by Ben Mize formerly of The Counting Crows, is mixed by Joel Jaffe at the legendary "Studio D" (Sausalito, CA) and was mastered at "The Plant Mastering Studio" (Sausalito, CA) by John Cuniberti.

The album is already attracting the attention the entertainment industry and press. "Sweaters," the lead track from Waters' new album, was featured in its entirety in a January 2004 episode of Lifetime Television's drama "1-800-Missing." Another song from Waters' new album, "Blue and White," was featured in an episode of The WB Network's "One Tree Hill" in December 2003.

In the March 2004 issue of Performing Songwriter, Clay Steakley writes, "These songs glimmer like a glass of red wine in candlelight. They're dark, rich and whisperingly intimate. A virtuosic blend of moody Tori Amos piano work and Sarah McLachlan harmony bending, Waters' self-titled release is startling in its depth of texture and lyric...Waters has a firm grasp on the power in the dynamics of her playing and the close, secretive delivery of her vocals."

Waters was also featured in the November 2003 issue of Jane Magazine, the Nov/Dec 2003 issue of Women Who Rock Magazine and the Winter 2003 issue of Independent Musician Magazine. "Sweaters" was also published in, "New Songs For Peace," an official United Nations program in November 2003.

"Sweaters" has been airing on San Francisco radio waves on both KFOG 104.5 FM and KPFA 94.1 FM. Waters has performed at such notable venues as The Chronicle Pavilion (Concord CA) opening for Savage Garden, The Roxy (Los Angeles CA), The Knitting Factory (Hollywood CA), Slim's (San Francisco CA) opening for Stereophonics, Freight and Salvage (Berkeley CA) and Mississippi Studio's (Portland OR).

The San Francisco Chronicle calls Beth's music, "...gorgeous, bittersweet...if given the right care, could someday devour VH1."

The album "Beth Waters" was named Best Female Singer/Songwriter CD of 2001-2003 by the Indie Acoustic Project. Beth was also a finalist in Billboard Magazine's Independent Music World Series held in January 2004 at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles.

  • ABSOLUTELY ONE OF MY FAVORITE CDs
    author: BCP "OSU Buckeyes"

I was completely blown away by this CD right out of the wrapper. Phenomenal voice, gorgeous piano, wonderful lyrcs, just pure talent from start to finish. If you listen to female vocalists like Tori, Alanis, Sarah, Vienna, etc... this is about as sure of a recommendation as I can make. I couldn't imagine how I could live without this CD and I have listened to it dozens of times. Pick it up, you will never regret it.

  • Still waters
    author: Stephen Doig

Beth Waters' songs, which are mostly of the meditative, reflective variety, are based around poignant and interesting piano arrangements and have a warm, smooth sound that washes over you quite beautifully. Her voice though, is the real selling point, and as vocals go, Beth Waters are near perfect. With a little more range and originality in her material, Beth Waters could really go far, but for now, this is a solid, well produced collection of songs that will likely appeal to fans of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos or Jewell.

  • This is a great CD!
    author: Jess

I am very impressed with Beth Waters, I just stumbled upon her on the web once and liked the sample songs I heard. Buying the CD was a great decision. She is a wonderful piano player and her voice is lovely and very natural. The lyrics are also very thought provoking and real. My only complaint is that I live in Minnesota and she only plays in the San Fracisco area!!

  • Beth rocks
    author: Rob

Many female artists claim to sound like Sarah, Tori or Jewell. Well, Beth Waters really does. If you like those three, you will love Beth. I'm liking this CD more every time I play it. And that's a sign of high quality. Beth Waters is a keeper.

  • Amazing, beautiful cd
    author: Laura

I highly recommend this cd if you enjoy piano-based, female musicians!

  • Okay
    author: Ben

Her lyrics are not up to snuff by any means but voice is nice, a bit contrived...a Tori Amos wanna be...especially with Edge of Earth. In the vein of early days, amateur liith fair but a good try anyway.

  • introduce her to your friends
    author: katie

this is a great cd. and that about sums it up. you can compare her to other female artists if you need to, but soon i think she'll be the name people are hoping to be in the same category as...the lyrics are meaningful, the sound is smooth, and her voice is pure. if you're thinking about getting this cd, i suggest it's worth the small price.

  • So amazing.
    author: Eric

Beth Waters is making music. Real music. It's about time someone did. Usually I'm very long-winded in my reviews but all I really have to say about this entire collection of songs is that it is utterly moving and brilliant. Every song displays so many emotions and Beth is able to reach those with her voice, her songwriting, and her piano skills. This is truly the best cd I've gotten my hands on in a long long time.

  • Eloquent and beautiful this is a true artist
    author: Saul Severe

This album is truly excellent and moving. The songs captivate yet have a very strong sense of self. I don't feel that the CD is working to hard but truly creating an atmosphere and speaking to me. I would recommend this CD to all who love beautiful music.

This CD exceeded my expectations by far! I continue to enjoy the CD, and am so glad I picked it up!

  • perfect for deep thinkers
    author: Monica

I absolutely love this CD. You know how on some CD's, you always have to skip over some songs you don't like? Not on Beth Waters' self-titled CD. The whole thing is great in its entirety. The collection of soulful lyrics and deep, dark melodies are haunting and beautiful. Definitely pick this CD up if you want something to listen to that will take you on a musical journey.

  • A Classic!
    author: A,my Collected Sounds

This is another one of those CDs that you pop into the stereo and know within moments that it's one you will be listening to over and over again for a long time. It feels like a staple in my music collection by the second song. The production is high quality. The songs are thoughtful, emotional and well written. The voice matches the songs beautifully with power and feeling. This CD has it all: outstanding vocals, exceptional musicianship, intelligent lyrics and gives the listener an all around wonderful feeling.

Beth Waters has a gorgeous voice and amazing songwriting talent. The song that convinced me to buy this CD was 'Sweaters', but after listening to CD over and over, 'Spun Sugar' and 'Philosophy' were soon added to my list of favorites. 'Dad' and 'Blue and White' are soothing. This artist can WRITE. Her lyrics are original and full of emotion. I am very happy with this CD.

  • Gorgeous voice, captivating melodies, great CD!
    author: jblittle

In case you didn't know before, Beth Water's second CD shows that you don't need a major record label to find great music. Beth's gorgeous voice (think Sarah McLachlan but smoother), captivating melodies, and touching lyrics makes this a CD you'll have on continuous repeat. It has quickly made its way onto my list of favorites. This collection of tracks tends to be more personal than those on her first CD, and more of them are stripped down to feature Beth, a piano, and a slower tempo. But Beth also hits the mark on the more richly produced tracks like the two that start off the CD, “Sweater” and “Spun Sugar,” two of my favorites that would be all over the radio if this was a major label. This is a great CD that will hopefully be followed up by many more from the very-talented Beth Waters. In the mean time, be sure to check out her first CD, Over The Tide.

  • very powerful
    author: gmcc32

I've never been disappointed by a purchase from CDBaby and this is no exception. It's a beautiful vocal/piano collection but there's a lot more to it. Songs like Philosophy pack quite a wallop musically. Edge of the Earth has a great shuffle feel to it, and Bells is just mesmerizing. Very injoyable CD.

  • a CD that is engaging, thought provoking, moving and downright mesmerizing
    author: Score! Music magazine

I found myself totally mesmerized. Of course I have a fondness for a beautiful voice accompanied by piano – Especially if the vocalist is also the pianist. Take Tori Amos or Michelle Branch: That’s just talent, plain and simple. And Beth Waters follows that same path. The vocals are crisp with a hint of just about every female vocalist of her genre (and some beyond) you can think of. There is absolute power in her vocals, when coupled with the muscled chords of tracks like "Philosophy" and "Edge of the Earth", and the eerie, plinky toy-piano sounds of "Finding Me" and breathy "Bells" is enough to blow your mind. I will warn however, if you're in a melancholy mood, avoid this CD at all costs. Unless you're looking for something to help you shed the tears and cleanse your system. Otherwise it promises to be a painful journey that might send you into fetal position! But between sobs you'll find tinges of hope and a CD that is engaging, thought provoking, moving and downright mesmerizing. Probably great for sitting on the back porch sipping margaritas!

  • An emotional tour with unexpected turns and accidentals.
    author: Mark Pearce

I like up-side surprises and this CD is certainly one. I just caught a smattering of her music on a website and thought I'd take a chance. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of the compositions and performances. Waters enjoys taking unexpected turns in lyrics and melody. In several cuts she reveals scars from her personal life, but even then she manages to deliver haunting melodies and pertinent messages. Add to that one of my favorite all time lines -- "God you're crazy, but I love the way you raised me," and you've got a CD worth spending some time with. Thanks Beth!

  • Her long-awaited sophomore album!
    author: Ghisy

Wow, I must say the new cd sounds quite different from her first album. It sounds very good though, but I wish she would have kept it more acoustic. Her music is still awesome. If you liked her from the start, you have to get this new album as soon as you can! And if you didn't, give it a try, you won't regret it! Two big thumbs up to Beth!
