notes

Bet Williams has an electrifying voice and high energy performing style unmatched by most contemporary female artists today. With the release of her fourth full length CD, Rose Tattoo, on Epiphany Records, she is quickly becoming a prominent figure in the singer/songwriter, folk and pop world.

After developing a cult following at Penn State in the late 80's, Bet packed up her poetry degree and a handful of songs to take them on the road. From House of Blues and the Troubadour in Los Angeles -to the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville and The Bottom Line in New York City, she's shared the stage with artists as diverse as Joan Osborne, Arlo Guthrie, John Gorka, and Baba Olatunji. Bet was also a finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas for New Folk; an honor shared by Lucinda Williams, Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett.

A passionate, dynamic performer, Bet's powerful voice can be earthy one moment and angelic the next. Songs like the bluesy "Killed My Man" show a strong, soulful style while the highly infectious "Ooh La La" demonstrates her ability to craft a powerful hook. Other songs like "Rose Tattoo" or "When I Was Yours" reveal a more sensitive artist. And "Mary", a song about a woman "working the bucket" (panhandling), show Bet's compassion and gift for storytelling.

As GUITAR ONE magazine put it, "A mover and shaker on the club and coffeehouse scene for more than 10 years, Bet Williams seems primed to hit the big time. She's blessed with all the right stuff: a fantastic voice, a talent for songwriting, good musicianship and a charismatic stage presence.. All in all you can bet on hearing more from this artist in the future."

  • Outstanding!
    author: Allison, NYC

I can not adequately describe the brilliance of this CD! I first discovered these tracks when Bet opened for another artist in a NYC club. These songs grabbed me-- hook, line, and sinker. I bought the CD that night and from it's first play, Rose Tattoo has bumped all the other "top" female vocalists right out of my player. Every song is a keeper and one can not help but replay this collection over and over again. What a RANGE! Not only vocally (there is no female artist to compare)-- but also range of style. Lyrics, music, arrangements... all just fantastic. I've purchased this CD for more than one friend and all of us rave. Get the CD and go see the artist. There is A LOT more to discover. Start with Rose Tattoo and you, too, will be hooked! This is top notch stuff. It belongs on the billboards.

  • tells tales and creates scenes
    author: Rockpile Magazine

Her music tells tales and creates scenes like a stage curtain that's just been lifted... Williams' songs reach deep into the soul.

  • percussive, blues influenced songs with elliptical lyrics
    author: The Philadelphia Inquirer

This "urban poet" writes percussive, blues influenced songs with elliptical lyrics...her powerful voice at the front of it all.

  • rocks pretty seriously
    author: Daily Freeman, New York

While Bet Williams may be described as a singer/songwriter, don't let that fool you into thinking she's lightweight. On the contrary, Williams' latest CD "Rose Tattoo" rocks pretty seriously. The emphasis is on rootsy, blues-influenced music that showcases her four-octave powerhouse voice. Her lyrics are at once thought-provoking and humorous, poetic and passionate.

  • Smoother than Alanis, sharper than Sheryl
    author: Arcade Magazine

If you're looking for something to stack between your Alanis Morrisette and Sheryl Crow albums in your CD rack, look no further. Smoother than Alanis, sharper than Sheryl, Williams can write and sing circles around them both
