Album Notes
Bex started making music at the age of 6, when she picked up her first drum and joined in west coast drum circles. She learned how to craft the instrument from resin, cedar, hide and steam. Steam is the sister to her power element. She keeps it bottled up for the right occasion then releases it as necessary; pleasure in the release, sometimes pain, but ultimately - purification.

Bex was trained classically on piano at age 9, self-taught on guitar at 13, had a love affair with the drum set and lost it all when she penned her first tune. Classical education and an innate understanding of rhythm are both very present in her writing.

"To me rhythm is the most vital element of music, so I try to infuse all my songs with percussivity and unexpected time/tempo changes. I adore the "Heavy Wood" genre, ala Kaki King, Don Ross, Ani Difranco, and many others." - Bex

Bex lived, studied, and played shows in Cowichan throughout her teens, before venturing to Nanaimo, BC to take part in the Malapsina University-College jazz program as a vocal major. She found a kindred in the soul of jazz music, in particular the vocal stylings of Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith; they influence her to this day. Her artistic vision is to collaborate with many different varieties of performers, from other solo songwriters to slam poets to multimedia artists to interpretive dancers- anyone who is creative and open to trying new things!

"There is no limit to what we can achieve with open hearts and minds." - Bex

Nov. 11, 2008

if you haven’t heard yet I've released my first professional EP release, co-produced by Richard Sales of glassWing studios!

Richard has engineered some amazing artists, from John Fahey to Danny Gatton to Bernice Reagon of Sweet Honey In The Rock and her wonderful daughter Toshi Reagon. He recorded Miles Davis (with Jim Smith), Wavy Gravy, Ken Kesey and tons of other folks.

He co-produced Hayley Sales’ first two records, First Flite and Drifter with Hayley. Produced Wavy Gravy (NAIRD award winning), Bhagavan Das, Shree Maa and Stories From The Hearth, winner of the Parent’s Choice Gold Award.

It should be noted that Richard Sales (and his GlassWing Studios) primarily wrote, produced and recorded music for film, interactive and video from 1989-2003. Most of his credits will be from that era: Nike, The Grateful Dead, PBS, Microsoft, ESPN, Apple, Intel, Warner Interactive, General Motors, Safeway, The Oregon Symphony and many more. From 2003 to present he has been developing his daughter, Hayley Sales. He ghost co produced, recorded and mixed Sunseed at GlassWing Studios.

The album features my original songs Righteous Babe, This Love, Kimberly, What’s Your Sign? and Joan Baez. Lending his sweet guitar licks is my lovely friend and accompanist Tad Ruszel! As well the incomparable Marisha Devoin on upright bass, Mr. Galen Mongeau on cajon/percussion and Ira Pelletier on mandolin. I am so thankful and excited to have this amazing talent on my team…

It’s akin to giving birth, that’s all I can say! So much time, energy, work, money and love invested in this little bundle of joy, I truly hope it will bring as much joy to you guys as it has for me.

Bex's album is great!! I ended up loving the tracks I was least fond of, listening (and singing, along with) them. Bex is a personal friend of mine and I am so proud of her work!! So glad that she has had it produced and is now selling it!!!
Way to go your righteous babe!!!
