Album Notes

Recorded over two hot August nights in the charming little village of Wakefield, Quebec, Live At The Black Sheep is an unrehearsed and absolutely riveting collection of original and traditional songs by the triple-bill of Greg Brown, Garnet Rogers, and the duo of Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman.

Although these four are old friends, this is the first time they've performed with each other in an extended round-robin style song swap. This exciting and challenging format reveals not only the well-known strengths of the featured singer, but also the intuitive and supportive talents of these musicians as accompanists. It's a thrill to hear this impromptu quartet feeling their way so instinctively as they're led through unknown territory. And while they hoot, goad and urge each other on, it's apparent that these musicians are surprising and delighting each other at every turn. Live At The Black Sheep pulls you right into the action.

All the realness and intimacy of a live folk festival type performance

A great combination of talent and material, plus the added bonus of a real LIVE feel. Very intimate and real sounding and makes me wish for the summer to be here soon so that I can hear these folks play at a festival some time soon.

The planets seemed to align for these 4 artists on this evening. Listening to this music is like coming home after too long away or talking to a close friend about nothing or everything. The musicianship, singing and chemistry is great. Just put it on, sit back and enjoy the ride.

I'm haunted by these melodies, these lyrics, these voices...

Missed Garnet Rogers in concert at Roaring Brook Nature Center (RBNC) this January. Went looking for another chance. Found on the RBNC website a link to him. Then saw this CD suggested; with Greg Brown, oh, yeah! and two others I haven't yet heard. Well, just Brown and Rogers would be worth it. So, got it... now I'm haunted by these melodies, these lyrics, these voices, these scenes they convey... "clothes on the line, rain comin' on...I stand at the window"... ..."she fills my cup with the milk of the moon...(some guy's voice harmonizin' behind Greg, soundin' like the one in the back of one's mind)... "notepaper torn from my hand, dancin' in the wind and the sand...like my life"..."nowhere to go 'o 'o 'o" from a voice that reproduces the bending notes bleeding out of an appalacian steel saw. These people's lyrics, songs, and their voices, together, reveal the raw, tangy fruits of leaving all their other possible callings behind, and going out on the road to follow that Muse. They're veterans, lifers. Listen.
