Album Notes

The Lascivious Biddies are an all-girl quartet consisting of:
Lee Ann Westover, vocals
Deidre Rodman, piano
Amanda Monaco, guitar
and Saskia Lane, bass

Their unconventional arrangements of original compositions and standards-to-be often include four-part harmonies and blur the line between jazz, pop and cabaret styles. The group brings their distinctive sound to as many different venues as they are able, including such venerable institutions as Joe's Pub (New York, NY), The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville, TN) and The Kennedy Center (Washington, DC). Rising stars of the many musical circuits, expect big things from The Biddies. Their genre-defying debut CD "Biddi-luxe!" was released to accolades on May 21, 2002, and Carnegie Hall has honored them with a place in their 2002-2003 Neighborhood Concert Series. In October 2004, they released their lush sophomore recording, "Get Lucky" - an extension of the unique poly-stylistic sound first heard on "Biddi-luxe!"

Wow! I'd first heard the Biddies harmonizing on Food Nation with Bobby Flay on the Food Network. Talk about great music! Wonderful styles from jazz and swing eras and a little bit of off-kilter humor similar to another New York native, Nellie McKay. Covers of "Rhode Island is Famous for You" (renamed to Coney Island in honor of the group's New York heritage), "It's Only A Paper Moon", "Moon River", "Head Over Heels" are pulled off flawlessly. Django Haskins' "Headed South" is saddening while The "Ladies Home Auxilliary" is one of those quite chipper. Originals like the soothing "Little D's Dream", the witty "Ethel & Esther", the swingin' "I'd Rather", jazzy "Alice", the uptempo Little House on "The Prairie Song", the dreamy "Idle Boy", and the wonderful acapella "The Anthem" are fantastic! Biddies4Ever! When's the next album coming out?

Biddi-Luxe is a brilliant recording, on the cutting edge of the New Age Cabaret movement. At once witty, itellectual, sentimental and wistful, this CD has no moments that are anything less than perfectly charming. The re-thinking of the classic Rhode Island into an ode to The Big Apple's Coney Island sets the tone for the rest of this masterpiece. Thoroughly modern and unapologetically sentimental sensibilities meet in a blender--adding a nostalgic flair to these gals' original tunes and a deeply satisfying irony to their thoughtfully chosen covers. Every song is its own highlight, and there are no dull moments. Press play. Enjoy. Repeat ad infinitum. The only thing better than listening to this CD is experiencing the energy of a Biddies concert. But that's another review altogether. Buy this CD. Buy it now. You can thank me later.
