SInce the Fall of 2005, Steve Biegner, Adam Bach, and Brian Sloan have been working on Steve Biegner's new album "As the Orchestra Swells (the lights go out)." Now, almost a year later, they are done. They had a little help from Gideon Freudmann who provided the brooding cello and other strange noises; from Matt Larsen who played some sweet piano and organ on some tunes; from Ross Bellenoit of the Systematics who played a sometimes angry, sometimes soothing guitar; and from Erin Cleary who gave us her beautiful voice and her beautiful artwork.
Dave Chalfant produces this new record, and he expertly captures the organic sound of the acoustic instruments as well as the intensity the trio has during live shows. He knew when to say "enough," on tracks such as the sparse "Onward! to Purgatory!!." And he also knew when to say "more" like with "Prodigal Son," a very Sufjan Stevens influenced song, or "A Window, a Vault..." which is a very big, grand, and lush in its orchestration. He also knew when to say, "Is anybody hungry?" and yes, feasts did abound!
All in all, the trio is very happy with what has become "As the Orchestra Swells (the lights go out)." They all hope that you "drink a dream so heavenly, God pines for your revery.
"...a blend of Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley, Steve Biegner is going places." - Local Buzz Magazine

AMAZING!

As the Orchestra Swells (The Lights Go Out) is filled with so many beautiful songs! Passionate, orchestral, enveloping... I can't really come up with the perfect set of words to describe them (especially February's Moon, Open Parenthesis, Drifting, Prodigal Son, and Onward to Purgatory... basically all of them). Steve's music defies an easy one- or two-word definition, but if I had to pin one on this cd, it would be: AMAZING! Buy it, you most certainly will not regret it!

An exercise in greatness
author: David Fried Oppenheim
"As the Orchestra Swells" is very simply great. Most artists hope all their lives to write one song as good as every song on this album. Biegner's voice is as beautiful, soulful, and honest as his lyrics. You will listen to this over and over and over and want to send all your friends out to purchase copies as well. Heck... they make great gifts, too. I run a venue in Western Massachusetts and have seen many musicians come through. It is easy to become a little numb to good music... but musicians like Steve Biegner remind me why I did it in the first place.

Excellent!

Steve Biegner's second CD is an excellent mix of rock and folk, and kept me interested and moving through each of its fourteen tracks. It is clear that he is a hardworking musician and a talented one at that. You will definitely not be disappointed if you purchase this CD!
