Album Notes

The first album from Big Al Davies is an eclectic mix of music that works as a sunny whole. Sea shanties about disliking the sea juxtaposed with an old timey song asking to sail away. Frascati Halloween has a strange meeting with Bob Dylan and the Queen.

Al plays guitars, bass, keyboards, mandolin and ukulele along with Pete Six on a couple of tunes.

The album is full of catchy tunes with humour shining through. Put simply just read the sleevenotes:

The world is full of many different people doing many different things. So the wise man said.
Well some would be surprised at what happens behind the closed doors of the ordinary suburban house. Here is the tinker, home from his work, building a doll's house from matchsticks for the son he never had but often wished he'd got round to. There is the tailor, tinkering with his lathe deep into the early hours crafting beautiful cardigans from the mohair of his labrador. Fishermen wait on the shores in their front rooms. Pacing up and down in the chill salt air. Behind the window boxes the plumber girds his loins. At number 9 a dreamy looking man fashions songs from thin air. He is the music man. Those who know are lucky for they will share the joy. You can share their share of the joy. Just press play...

and an early review continued this from Paula Bailey of the Isle of Wight.

"The new album rings out in a small house near a river on a little island just off the coast of Englandshire. Small children rush into the street to dance to the melodies, bored housewives sing as they turn away from the afternoon weepie and rejoice, commuters leave their cars and embrace their fellow road-users, and the woodland creatures frolic.

Soon all the isles of the world will be filled with the eclectic sounds of the valleys, and all who have been touched by it shall wear a Fez"

Big Al's debute album is as good as we hoped it might be. Full of great catchy tunes and quirky lyrics. The whole thing sparkles with warmth and friendliness. Stand out tracks for me are "Frascati Halloween" (try and catch the great video!) and the rollicking "Landlubber". A mini-masterpiece!
