Album Notes

"A captivating versatile group of dynamic musicians with a repertoire that not only represents the organ trio genre, but a full spectrum of jazz and blues".

In 2006 Wayne De La Cruz (Hammond B-3), Kendrick Freeman (Drums) and Paul Branin (Tenor sax & Guitar), began pulling their collective ideas and energy together to create The Big Trio using each others diverse musical skills and backgrounds to play a repertoire that is equally as diverse. Their current CD "Like Night" shows their dynamic ablity to perform range and styles from straight ahead jazz to soulful blues. This recording includes four of Wayne's original compositions along with tunes by Joe Henderson, Jerry Bergonzi, Fred Lacy, Dave Burns and Henry Glover. This recording for The Big Trio is just the first of great things to come.

For a jazz trio this music is anything but simple. Every time I spin this CD I hear something new and exciting, so I keep coming back. It could be a clever twist to one of Paul Branin’s licks that just flew past me before and this time grabs my ear. I’ve given up trying to decide whether I like Paul better on guitar or sax. He makes very good things happen with both instruments, whether it's jazz or blues. Or it might be some cool cymbal work by Kendrick Freeman. There is plenty. What an incredible touch! Kendrick defines subtle, and that’s something special in a drummer. Or maybe I get splashed with a new color from the overflowing palette that is Wayne De La Cruz’s B-3 organ. Wayne definitely knows how to show off his instrument without being a show-off. If you love B-3 you have to check this guy out because he does it all. His bass work especially gets to me. Probably the best bass from an organ that I've ever heard. In short, the tunes are good, the playing is fantastic, the production is clean – what more can I say? If there are Big Trio CDs to come that’s great but I’m still digesting this serving and loving it.
