Album Notes

"Bill Coon is one of this country's best kept secrets... this former Montreal guitarist has earned high respect from musicians and fans alike for his exceptional playing."

Ross Porter, Host, After Hours, CBC Radio

" When I think of Ed Bickert, Oliver Gannon and now Bill Coon, the common qualities that spring to mind are understatement, supportiveness and boldness laced with a healthy dose of humility. Coon's latest is a smorgasbord for attentive ears and devotees of the genre."

Charles Winokoor, Cadence Magazine

What is Speakeasy?

Jazz guitarist Bill Coon's much anticipated trio recording conveys many moods, from the bittersweet Autumn Leaves to the bop inspired Speakeasy.
Bill's beautiful sound and mastery of the guitar is evident throughout the entire album - a wonderful collection of original and standard tunes. The trio showcases the marvelous interaction between the players as well as their outstanding solo abilities. Tenor saxophonist Ross Taggart is featured on four tracks, complementing the trio with his warm sound and killer playing.

Who plays on the CD?

Darren Radtke is one of Canada's most lyrical bassists. He is a first-rate soloist as well as a superlative accompanist. The same can be said for Dave Robbins who brings his wide range of experience and fantastic musicality to the group. Juno award winner Ross Taggart's gorgeous tenor sound and exciting solos full of warmth and humour are a wonderful addition to the group. Led by the well-known guitarist Bill Coon, the group showcases his abilities as both a performer and a composer.

"Bill is an amazing guitar player with a wickedly sensitive touch and a very confident sense of swing. He has a CD called Speakeasy that is a must have for any serious jazz fan."

Cory Weeds
Jazz musician & owner of the Cellar Jazz Club

"Take 'Autumn Leaves' with its Jim Hall-like pacing and restrained exuberance; it hands-down ranks as one of the most original versions I've yet heard."

Charles Winokoor, Cadence Magazine

"Bill Coon is a superb guitarist...a wonderful player who gets better and better each time I see him. In addition to being a wonderful entertainer, Bill is also a talented arranger and composer. So, if you have the opportunity to see Bill Coon in concert, do so...I guarantee you won't be disappointed."

Rick Cluff, Host, The Early Edition, CBC Radio One

"...he's clearly from the less-is-more school of jazz performers, never settling for an easy spray of notes when a well-chosen handful will do."

Alexander Varty, The Georgia Straight

B- Effort
author: Blue Balls
This was better than i expected. less celebrated than i would have hoped for. BillCoonTrio is very professional people. no doubt about there training. the only thing that kept me going was Coon's dilligent strumming. the saxaphone blended into the Speakeasy helped alot. less boredom after song 6 as well. i need to wind down after working late and this mellow 11 set works for me. Now it's back to the salt mines for Blue Balls.

Bill is very pronounced on his record. Not to shabby for a unknown musician i would say. He does very nicely on his first effort. He and his fans will be pleased with his art. Good one Mr. Coon. Save the racoons and the rascals a few more cheeky jazz solos for your next record fellow. Please and thank you Bill Coon trio.

Nasty Night Vibes
author: Ms. Minka Ho
A friend recommended Bill Coon trio to me. She's also another asian godess and co-worker of mine in the industry. I burned myself a copy and now enjoy this music. Wait...stop, gentlemen of this fair city. A sexy Saxaphone appears on Alone Together. This really enhances the vibe. Like when Bluee Balls and his co-stars appear on Dvd's at my appartment. So to does Coon utilize his cagey supporting cast. Like when Minka services other stars...there but the Grace of God go I. This is the part of my review whereby i state categorically:that Bill Coon Trio is some enchanting jazz music. Minka is working late tonight on some internet pics and will likely have the 'Speakeasy' on her hi-fi after hours. Hopefully; my co-stars will appreciate Coon's licks...while reflecting on my luscious lips. Hhmnn??

Classic elegant trio
author: Toby Johns
Bill Coon's work is well known. Like his reputation...his chops and solos unite and captivate the audiences senses. You will know why after hooking this disc from CD Baby or seeing him on stage. Preferably in your city. I have wanted to see this dude play live. Finally i got the chance with my crew (circa 2006). Coon's trio and his trusty guitars...have a lot of pluck. They bring an honset, artistic approach to the Cabaret. Yikes...look out Scofield? Mr. Coon is a real master on the axe!!
