Somehow BIlly Schaub has managed to capture the "current" sounds of America. If the rivers flow and the trees whIsper and the land Itself pulsates, It Is In fact movIng to the sound of BIlly Schaub... StIll In hIgh school, BIlly and "The FIeld MIce" captured a young hearted
audIence whIle playIng shoulder to shoulder wIth The Ramones, ChrIs Isaak and Drama Rama to name a few of theIr 80's headlIners. "We opened for a lot of names...and we were to young to drInk or even drIve!"
Suddenly, these kIds found themselves record..ng theIr hIts "Coconut BIkIn.."
and "Lonely Son of a BItch" at Fantasy StudIos In Berkeley, where Jefferson
StarshIp and John Forgerty's cIgarettes stIll smouldered In the ashtray. Before
leavIng for Los Angeles BIlly had establIshed a strong musIcal presence wIth hIs punk band "BlInd Acceptance" and "The FIeld MIce".
In between tourIng wIth the BrodIe Stewart Band and openIng for Creedence Clearwater Revisited, "I've wrItten and performed pop, punk, country, rap, jazz, and every style under the sun."
Many bands came-a-callIng for hIm to play bass and sIng, whIle BIlly was quIetly recordIng song after song In hIs own studIo. "I dId It all, the Sunset StrIp, a regular at UnIversal Bar and GrIll and even ErnIes Taco House. Press reviews:
He isn't with the times. More than any other singer, he is the times. If the electric guitar were disinevented tonight, a few thousand singers would be out on their amps. But not Schaub. He defies fad. He stayeth. He has known more and felt more about the stuff songs are made of, the words of poets. You cant sing the way he does until you've been Belly to big belly with Reality a few times. That's what makes insight, and what's made The Schaub. What's made him last and get better. If he clears his throat having just swallowed a shot glass, the people all laugh. If they didn't he'd know he was in trouble. When they stop laughing, then your in trouble. But Billy ain't in no trouble. He leans into the front end of Big Belly and starts singing all the way to "Pigs on the Wing". And there's no chop-choppy phrasing along the way. No dit-dit-dit. It comes out mmmmmmmmmmm all the way. Its like he makes a contest out of singing without breathing. If he runs out of gas on a phrase, which is a very rare bird for the man, then he runs out of gas two-and-a -half miles after any one else would. He sings like he's got an extra tank of Petroleum in his tummy. So the man's the master of pop singing form. But that's not the big thing. What's the big thing is the way he uses form. Schaub, when he sings at you, doesn't look at you. He looks about six inches behind your eyes. His eyes a little far away. A little closer to where the truth lives. If you want to pick a word for it, pick one in seven easy letters: Honesty. The thing is, no singer is quite as honest. And that makes no one else quite as good, doesn't it.
Instruments:
All vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass guitars, Drum Machine and percussion.
A working musician for more than twenty years, Billy Schaub began guitar studies at the age of eleven. After garnering first place honors in more than 50 living room shows, Billy studied music theory and composition at Diablo Valley College. At D.V.C. Billy was tutored by the late guitar legend Stubby Thomson and former Dirt Merchant sideman Greg Dale.
