Birdmonster - EP Engineered and mixed by Justin Phelps. Recorded at Tiny Telephone Studios. Mastered by John Cuniberti at the Plant in Sausalito, CA
Birdmonster is the real thing. In a time where "indie" is thrown around easier than loose change, rarely does a band succeed in being sincere and on top of that inventive. Birdmonster is David Klein on guitar, Justin Tenuto on bass, Zach Winter on drums, and Peter Arcuni on guitar and vocals. Their sound is a unique blend of classic singer / songwriter influences such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty, laced with the raw edge of Fugazi, and vocal styles echoing early Modest Mouse. It's not surprising that this group started out as an instrumental rock band. No single element overpowers the other which gives a well-crafted sonic landscape that could stand on its own even without vocals. Opening track "Resurrection Song" starts off with delicately layered guitar parts which use space as an instrument and the even the most simple guitar lines sound the boldest. Arcuni's lyrics are simultaneously confrontational and comforting while crooning confessional vocals that at times sound almost desperate. His defiant wail may give a nod to Isaac Brock but contains a delicacy all his own. "All Holes in the Walls" is a split tempo ballad that starts out with a slower folk jaunt and moves into a fast paced indie-rock lament backed by pounding drums and catchy rock hooks and a pleading chorus " baby you're outside / won't you come inside tonight / don't go / to sleep at all." The final song "Janine" of the three song EP is drenched in heartbreak and adorned with more catchy hooks that keep an upbeat tone despite the lyrical content "don't you see / I said I loved you / but I lied."
Overall, this EP is a finely crafted piece of work that does more in three songs than most bands can manage with a full length. Try to catch them at the Edinburgh Castle Pub in San Francisco while you can. This band is on the verge of explosion. -Rian Rochford

This is one of the best EP's I have heard in a while. Resurrection Song is my favorite of the three and reminds me of my favorite Modest Mouse tunes. I highly recommend checking these guys out.

Very addicting. Birdmonster EP works a person's biomechanics and psyche into a true grit crescendo, but also makes you want to hear more, whether listening solo, in a group, or in a crowd. Turn yourself away if you can to other music or nostalgia, but this particular CD will keep you coming back. It really helps relax and release recovery for race training. It's worth 11 stars and couple of heavens to boot!
