Album Notes

Birthday Suits formed in spring of 2005 and released their debut album Cherry Blue later that year. After the release of Cherry Blue, it did not take long for Birthday Suits to be recognized by music fans and critics in the Twin Cities. They were named the best live artist of 2006 by Minneapolis/St. Paul alternative weekly paper the City Pages.

After receiving acclaim locally Birthday Suits began to receive praise from music publications across the country. The Seattle Weekly proclaimed Birthday Suits to be, “an utterly explosive live band who are perfectly capable of restoring one's faith in rock 'n' roll with their sweaty, fiercely committed performances.”

Victim of Time praised the band by stating, “Birthday Suits are Minneapolis' most utterly bombastic and unhinged duo of musical mastery known in the underground's inner circles. Racing back and forth between genres, as well as all over the stage is nothing new for Matthew and Hideo (both formerly of Sweet J.A.P.), but this newly forged combo really widens their scope of sound to encompass different directions once thought inconceivable by a two man operation. Everytime Birthday Suits play a show, they effortlessly shred modern 'punk' music into visceral shavings that stick under your fingernails with such a magnetic and irresistable passion in their delivery, and you can bet it's topped with nothing less than 120% aggression and style. Their name doesn't allude that these guys play in the nude, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see some overwhelmed first-timers stripping down in front of the stage, either, so look out for one of the most frenetic performances you're likely to catch all year.”

The concept of the garage rock duo has long surpassed novelty, and now officially entered the realm of widely accepted band format. Still, it takes the right combination of guitarist and drummer (usually) to fill the sound void left by what most would consider a "traditional" lineup. In order for it to work, the energy levels must be raised, the guitar playing must be tightly busy, and the drummer must work harder than ever to fill air space and drive the rhythms. This St. Paul, MN, two-piece meets the qualifications for the sweat-inducing job, and they clearly revel in the fast-paced freneticism that accompanies their chosen modus operandi. They wrangle their way through songs that explode in short bursts, often leading to steady guitar riffs that hammer down while the vocals take over in sing-along choruses. While the title track almost reaches the four-minute mark, the rest of the songs are brilliantly short, peaking with intensity and snatching it back before you know what happened. The results are slightly chaotic, wonderfully discomforting, and not for the faint of heart.
