BJ MIZELL
Acoustic / Folk Rock / Country
"Singer/Songwriter"
Houston, Texas
In her own words,
“Yes, I write all my own songs. I just decided to get my feet wet.
I really never considered myself a front and center entertainer. “
In The Beginning,
BJ grew up on the San Jacinto River in Cleveland, Texas.
She started singing and playing piano at an early age, often in the church.
BJ’s parents introduced her to traditional country music. Artists like, Hank Williams Sr., Loretta Lynn, Jim Reeves, and Merle Haggard, (BJ’s idol) were heroes around their home.
BJ’s Mom has a beautiful voice too and always sang around the house. Her Dad loved to play music and it seemed their home was always filled with friends coming over to play and sing.
“I remember thinking I was really getting away with something because I was allowed to stay up past bedtime to sit and listen.”
Her Dad, a truck driver by profession, would sometimes take BJ on trips with him. She loved to chat with the other truckers on the CB radio, all the while jamming’ to those ol’ country singers like. Red Simpson, Dave Dudley, Red Sovine. Jerry Clower and Minnie Pearle.
As BJ got older she started listening to rock music like most teenagers.
Then somewhere along the way, years later, after some bad relationships and handfuls of broken promises, she started listening to folk and blues music.
All of a sudden, BJ had something to say and it surfaced through her writing.
A mesh of rootsy blues/rock/folk/country songs that clearly define her as
a singer and songwriter.
BJ graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1992 with an Accounting degree.
She has worked in various analyst roles with the energy industry over the last 10 years.
Dynegy, El Paso Energy, and now Calpine, Houston Texas.
Influences:
Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson
Emmylou Harris, Joe Cocker, Delbert McClinton, Bonnie Raitt, Van Morrison, Al Green
