From the moment that you hear the line, “My crazy mind concocts a rhyme and then delivers it,” you instantly wonder whether this is just another sub par performer. Upon further listening however you realize this is actually someone quite different. BK is the “unexpected jewel of Hip Hop”, says Ericka Withers, a local fan . With a great ability to fuse deep lyrical content with intense melodies, BK is raising the bar for emcees and singers alike.
After the departure of her abusive father at 4, BK realized quickly that life is full of unexpected disappointments. She began to write as a means of therapy, using lyrics and melodies to express her painful experiences. “I still feel blessed,” says BK. “I was given this magical gift that I intend to use to express my passions and pain.” After hearing her album BK’S WAY, it is clear she has done just that. From eerie recollections of abuse, to the frustrations of trying to make it, all the way to how it feels to move on the dance floor, BK has successfully put together a melting pot of songs guaranteed to guide you through her realities.
Growing up in San Francisco California, BK learned hip hop from her local community. Attending public school near Marin City where rapping was an all day activity, BK was quickly immersed in a world where she could finally see where her passion resided. Coming into the music scene with a sound reminiscent of MC Lyte mixed with Lauryn Hill, BK learned quickly she could blend emceeing with singing to attract a much larger audience. Drawing inspiration from local artists like Tupac Shakur all the way to Aretha Franklin, BK began her path to reach her dream. From porch competitions to eventually playing larger venues, BK continues to own her craft as a true original.
Now residing in LA, there is no question that BK will accomplish her goal as a successful recording artist. Having worked with people all over the country, from Prozack Turner to RA Scion of Common Market, appearing on public tv and radio shows, and recently releasing her debut album BK’S WAY, it is clear that BK really is an unexpected jewel.

Come see things B.K.'s way.
author: L. Ron Lee
B.K.'s Way is a well-balanced production in Hip-Hop that, in this case, reached across cultural lines and grabbed someone with nearly zero exposure and understanding of the musical category.
Having by happenstance become acquainted with B.K. through an online independent music forum, I found in her a sincerity and straightforwardness, even a ferocity, that is balanced beautifully in this record by the same sincerity in an open window to her emotional vulnerabilty. That vulnerability could never be interpreted as weakness, however. This is an artist who's paid dues. This is an artist who has the fortitude to look adversity in the face, give it voice and transform it into hefty musical impact. This is an artist with substance.
And speaking of art, her skill in firing off rhyme is crystal-clear in every track here. That the spoken word is her life is unequivocal. And, even those of us still mystified by the term "bouse" can understand at a molecular level the flip-side essence of this work: dance. B.K. will move you. But B.K. will come at you from different angles; her groove is never a rut. Her groove is painted from a palette of colors unique to her valiant persona. Her groove demonstrates that she is supreme leader of her realm, and featured contributors reflect the respect that she commands.
Come see things B.K.'s way. Your perspective will expand.
