notes

A gutsy independent project combining Smokey Mountain soul and Delta stomp, this Asheville, NC-based troupe proves time and again it has a solid grasp on American roots music (as well as good storytelling), almost evoking scenes from dimly-lit juke joints from a time long gone. Blackley's original songs contain themes that run the gamut from grief and love to murder and heartache (with an occasional train song thrown in).

Blackley (singer, songwriter, guitar player) was born in the tiny fishing hamlet of Warsaw, VA, near the Chesapeake Bay. She began writing stories at age 5 or 6, as best she can remember. At the age of 19, she began playing guitar and singing, with no formal music training. She began putting her tall tales and stories to music soon after.

"When A Woman..." is the second recording from Laura Blackley, released in 2002.

This was the kind of music I enjoy, bluesy ballads. It is a well done CD.

i don't usually like country that much but i do really like this album ! i especially liked the ghost of frankie silver. she was my grgr aunt frances stewart silver, and this is a true story. she was hung in morganton, north carolina in 1832 at eighteen years old. laura blackley tells how her husband charlie silvers was going to kill their child so she killed him and tried to hide his body after chopping it up. the whole album has great songs on it and i love her sultry voice. my sister introduced me to this album and i'm so glad she did.

This CD is incredible. Laura and company have taken it to the next level with this offering. I crawled in through the first cut, Codependents Blues- Found myself shaking my head in agreement with Pieces, moving to the Rhythm of When a Woman's Got the Blues and left satisfied after taking a seat in Yo Kitchen. You gotta get this CD!

I recently heard Laura play at Take Back the Night in Asheville, and was thrilled to find this CD for sale. The range of songs from bluegrass to blues forces me to listen to something different from my standard fare.
