Album Notes
The love of Jesus is the most transformative and powerful force in the world. And it’s also radical in ways the world often forgets: it is unconditional and completely nonviolent. Conscientious Objector is a stunning debut album and one man’s call to spread this good news.

The poetic, thoughtful, and gently provocative songs remind us that Christians follow the greatest conscientious objector the world has ever known. Jesus’ whole life was a conscientious objection to the way the powers that be organize the world—both during the time in which He lived and now. These songs also remind us that the first place to address violence is within ourselves.

A skilled and gifted lyricist, Blair Pettyjohn has a voice of strength and clarity. He takes on difficult issues of discrimination, war, and the death penalty with tenderness and passion. For more than eight years, Blair was unable to play his guitar because of a hand condition. Today, the simplicity of his music—one voice, one guitar—leaves a lasting memory on the heart.

The son of a Presbyterian minister and the grandson of a Methodist minister, Blair has been involved in issues of peace and nonviolence for more than 25 years. He is a co-founder of Ahimsa Christi, a peace and nonviolence group in the Washington, DC area. Music is but one natural overflow of this call in Blair’s life.

Blair sings with passion a mix of folk and blues tunes he has written himself (except for Amazing Grace). This album brings me closer to God and is a reminder of Jesus, the nonviolent warrior who battles within Himself to love God and people more than life itself. You will be blessed in hearing these songs.

this CD will take your breath away...
... and make you want to meet the Jesus that Blair knows (if you don't know Him already). Blair's music is rich and wonderful, and the stories he tells are powerful witness to the grace and blessing available to us in the moral difficulties we face as individuals and as a society. I feel like I'm listening to (a very talented) friend singing beautifully about a deep truth that he wants me and all of us to know about too. Jesus' love can give each one of us the strength to choose a path of love and non-violence.
