A bare bones, stripped down post-punk rendering pushes the boundaries of exemplary lo-fi. A warm, naked, ragged, and electric record, the Bloodsugars' self-titled debut exhibits a nu-wave aesthetic while simultaneously contributing something entirely new

Album Notes

Jason Rabinowitz made like a kid in a candy store when he started The Bloodsugars-he knew exactly what he wanted and came to clear the counters bare. With an unmistakable garage-synth pop hook in his ear and a honed songwriter's aesthetic, he recruited bassist John Rosenthal of the Giraffes (Razor and Tie), and drummer David Beauchamp of The Jeffrey Lewis Band (Rough Trade), both NYC underground scene veterans. Together they created a sound for the future, drawing upon influences that include many of the durable songwriting talents - Television, Prince, The Kinks, The Clash, Elvis (from when he was Attractive to when
he was Cruel) - from our halcyon legwarmer days.

But fear not the gimmick factor that can limit bands with influences in this era: As the Village Voice notes, The Bloodsugars are "refreshingly unconnected to bands of the '80s in its simplicity."

Like the best sugar rush from when you were neither neurotic nor of legal age brought back to the future to your slightly older, definitely smarter, infinitely-cooler-yet-still-more-comfortable-nodding-your-head-than-dancing self, the eponymous debut EP soars unabashed to hypoglycemic heights from its opening rave-up "First Come Takers," with its lyrics you memorize on contact, its chorus as infectious as the best moments of Is This It, and its relentless Nieve-esque keyboards.

The sweet high holds tight on the sublime grooves of songs like "Clash of the Religions" until The Bloodsugars bring you back down with the slow-burning, astounding "Jezebel"; all elegant obsession tied tightly around shimmering guitars and fearless vocals. This self-produced EP will leave you wondering if lo-fi can get any higher as you look for your next Bloodsugars fix.

This CD arrived to me in perfect condition. I was a little thrown off that the art work on the cover is so dark, as if the printer ODed on black ink. Up the contrast button boys! The Blood Sugars is great music tho. I think these guys are the new sweet punk you crave, buy it and dance to it! Queen Viktoria
