"Artists like Blowtop make the world of Indie music a paradise"
-Mark Lush, MidwestBands.com
February 2006
This record is a perfect example of the great things that can happen when you get a group of inspired and gifted musicians in a recording studio, give them great songs, turn on the machines, and let 'em do their thing!
Produced by the songwriting team of Patrick Shanley and John Jacobs, the duo assembled some of the finest musicians in the Detroit area for this project. The result is a work rich in musical textures and craftsmanship, making for a record that can be listened to again and again -- the songs are catchy and instantly memorable, with fine arrangements and lyrics that will make you think.
Blowtop is a hybrid mix of a musical train with intermittent stops along the way ... from Rock to Roots, Pop to Jazz, Blues to Ska, along with a few stops in between.
Groove to the full tilt drive of Hasting Street Jive ... the power pop of Open Roads... the funky So Sad ... and the melodic The Island. These songs are just the beginning of the musical journey this band will take you on. Click on the samples and turn up the volume!!!
Fans of the Tangerine Trousers should check out this CD -- 3 members of the Trousers are featured on this recording!!

Think Jazz meets James Bond at a pop concert.

Blowtop has one thing that most bands are missing - great lyrics and cool tunes you can remember. Their self-titled debut is a mix of just about every musical influence imaginable from pop to jazz to blues to R&B and guitar rock. These tunes catch you right from the first saxophone beats of "Hastings St. Jive," which I found myself singing along to repeatedly in the car and the more poppy, Elvis Costello influenced "Open Roads." Blowtop has been working the local scene for years and have yet to see the accolades they so richly deserve. This disc reminds me of how many great musicians there really are in Detroit.
