notes
we are only but mere visitors to this planet, our lives a brief moment in time. and when that moment is finished we shall return back to whence we came. life is a great story but only one act in a play of many. death leads into life again and the story to be continued.
"This music is very intriguing, as dark, brooding, and haunting as the angel of death itself."
Reviewed by Keith Hannaleck, Progressive World, July 2002
"Moody pop songs with a whaleload of sonic ideas behind them. The songs themselves have a nice flow, blending the diverse sounds into a solid unit. Some conceptual bands sound contrived. Not these folks. Not by a long shot."

"blowuphollywood seems like an ironic moniker considering that the project comes across as a soundtrack for a film noir . . . though, ahem, certainly not a Hollywood film score. This music is somehow simultaneously as disturbing as it is beatific, conjoining dirgelike acoustic guitars, surrealistic strings and languorous vocal harmonies into tone poems which literally follow one individual's ethereal passage into afterlife. The mystery is reinforced by the artists' decision to reveal no credits, names or photos, a surprisingly egoless kowtow to the art considering the incredible professionalism of this production. Fans of Lisa Gerrard or Sigur Rós will like this."

"While there is a bunch of ethereal, instrumental music that seems cinematically inclined, this self-titled disc from Blow Up Hollywood takes things a step further, serving as a literal soundtrack for a film in the works. In the future, the band will score the film live as it's projected on three screens in front of audiences. Based on the music, one expects an evocative, eerie B & W kind of film, with its plotline about a boy who dies and has a trip to Heaven interrupted by detours to Purgatory and Hell."

"I am absolutely obsessed with "Blow Up Hollywood"! I don't write much anymore for the 'zine as I'm too busy with the administrative overhead, but
this one I'm doing! Really excellent disc!"
Robert R. Lewis, Editor-in-Chief of music-reviewer.com, July 2002
"blow up hollywood is a stark and thoughtfully composed meditation on death, dying, life and the afterlife, featuring plaintiff pianos, viably poignant vocals and mournful strings that quickly and consistently carve the path for clarity and introspection. It's hard to find words for a release this fresh and intelligent, so it's probably best to say that this is an absolute essential meant for those who wish to brace both beauty and sadness.

I get it.
author: Ian P.Aside from the final track that doesn't go anywhere for me personally, the rest of the album is solid and totally is what B-UH is all about. This is the second album I bought by them and it is just as awesome as FAKE. Totally digging the voiceovers. Loving the lyrics as well. Your voice rocks!
A mesmerizing masterpiece .....

What a beautiful emotional journey!!! What a great and new experience this band and album are just great and in my top ten of all time. A bit hard to explain but imagine a mix of acoustic Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Dashboard Confessional BUT a highly original album indeed. This album can not be classified and brings together atmospheric themes with a bit of progressive rock as well as a modern rock sound. How the band does this is simply mind blowing!!! The songs are just unexplainable and the album also features several instrumentals featuring a string section and a cellist. Again, this is an emotional filled journey and beautiful album that crosses genres of music and has to be listened to or you may miss out on one of the best bands of the decade!!!

an intelligent and intriguing work of art
author: EveIf ever there was a project shrouded in mystery, this is it. With no credits whatsoever in their CD inserts, Blow Up Hollywood gives the impression that the music it puts forth is created by some larger, egoless entity rather than by a group of talented musicians. Cellos, violins, guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, and a wide area of sonic ideas set their debut self-titled release apart from the rest of the formulaic acts we hear everyday. Hailed as an intelligent and intriguing work by many critics, Blow Up Hollywood artfully takes the listener on a thickly textured journey to the other side of human existence, death.
Cocteau twins meet David Sylvian on a RGD (REALLY GOOD DAY).
author: Brent RobertsThese folks - whoever they are - make music for me. I have long been a fan of this genreless genre called art. So few recordings come along that actually fill it that every time I discover a new member I am an instant convert. This is smart timeless and beautiful and will fill my ears for some time to come. Music as the life giving flow...
author: Lilith, San FranciscoBlow Up Hollywood created a terrific piece of inspiration, which is definitely a must for everyone who seeks the essence of life. The talented band managed to create a musical, deeply touching rhythm with the power to speak for itself. Whereas a lot of today's music follows the path of commercialism, Blow Up Hollywood presents a CD successfully deviating from mainstream ideology. The thoughtful compilation of songs reflects a tribute to the infinite search for the essence of life. The listener becomes part of the journey, inspired to question, feel, and most of all, think. Therein, the album surely represents music... ...as the life giving flow.
a cd that reaches into your soul
author: Kelley, Birminghamthe integrated lyrics and music make this one of my all-time favorite cd's. blow up hollywood is one of the most unique and fresh bands to come out in a very long time. after hearing the song samples, i had to order this cd shipped to me by overnight express. yeah, it's that good.

Hey, I even liked it enough to enter its info into FreeDB...
author: Andy Ganse, SeattleVery nice. I guess you could call it a mellow 'mood rock' concept album. As a Pink Floyd fan I really dig it, like something maybe out of the 'Dark Side of the Moon' period. Hey, I even liked it enough to enter its info into FreeDB (the public domain net service that tells your pc-based cd player what the titles of the album & tracks are). The track names imply a parallel between the journey that one might follow after death thru purgatory, judgement, and acceptance into heaven, and the journey the loved ones left behind might follow thru denial, grieving, and acceptance of their loss. Perhaps the dying party follows their own path from denial to acceptance as well. Either way, that path is beautifully evident in the music. An interesting twist I discovered by accident was listening to the album with the repeat-album function turned on. The first song starts with sound effects of a fainting heartbeat, a hospital intercom paging a doctor, and some baby crying in the background, suggestive of the last sounds one might hear before death. But after the album's emotional journey, and the repeat to the beginning again, then in hearing the sound effects this time the baby's crying immediately stands out and brings rebirth or reincarnation to mind. Like I say, very nice.

A Beautiful Work of Art
author: KimThis album is absolutely amazing – a beautiful work of art. Blow Up Hollywood has a unique sound that is as haunting and melancholy, as it is uplifting and inspirational. I don’t usually take the time to review the albums that I purchase, but this one deserves to be in everyone’s collection. I just can’t get enough of it. Trust me – it’s fantastic! You won’t be disappointed.
Outstanding, one of the most original albums of 2002!
author: Lew FisherSomewhere between acoustic based progressive rock and creative singer/songwriter material lies the music of Blow Up Hollywood. Their debut album, which offers no insight into the music or the band members is a stark look at life, death and what lies beyond and between. Their music is textured with strings and samples throughout the album, but it has a very "organic" feel to it. To say that poignant lyrics and emotive instrumentals are the highlight of this album would only serve the music as a whole a grave injustice. This is an album of cohesion, precision execution and thought provoking messages- both lyrically and musically. The instrumentation on the album is acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, synth, bass, drums, cello, violin, viola and trumpet. The lack of member credits indicate the album and the band are about the sum of Blow Up Hollywood, not the individuals themselves. Blow Up Hollywood will appeal to fans of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Ros solely for the "Sonic" production of the album. There are times when the album reminds me of the acoustic based Pink Floyd songs, depth and atmospherics are abundant on this album. This is not to say it's been done before, as it is indeed a refreshingly original piece of work. In this age of polished productions, MTV glitter and mass marketing campaigns and tours, it's great to see a band of such talent re kindle a lost art form, which is the act of listening. Sit back and take the trip with Blow Up Hollywood, you may not want to come back. http://www.blowuphollywood.com Thanks for your time, Lew Fisher
