Album Notes

we are only but mere visitors to this planet, our lives a brief moment in time. and when that moment is finished we shall return back to whence we came. life is a great story but only one act in a play of many. death leads into life again and the story to be continued.

"This music is very intriguing, as dark, brooding, and haunting as the angel of death itself."

Reviewed by Keith Hannaleck, Progressive World, July 2002

"Moody pop songs with a whaleload of sonic ideas behind them. The songs themselves have a nice flow, blending the diverse sounds into a solid unit. Some conceptual bands sound contrived. Not these folks. Not by a long shot."

"blowuphollywood seems like an ironic moniker considering that the project comes across as a soundtrack for a film noir . . . though, ahem, certainly not a Hollywood film score. This music is somehow simultaneously as disturbing as it is beatific, conjoining dirgelike acoustic guitars, surrealistic strings and languorous vocal harmonies into tone poems which literally follow one individual's ethereal passage into afterlife. The mystery is reinforced by the artists' decision to reveal no credits, names or photos, a surprisingly egoless kowtow to the art considering the incredible professionalism of this production. Fans of Lisa Gerrard or Sigur Rós will like this."

"While there is a bunch of ethereal, instrumental music that seems cinematically inclined, this self-titled disc from Blow Up Hollywood takes things a step further, serving as a literal soundtrack for a film in the works. In the future, the band will score the film live as it's projected on three screens in front of audiences. Based on the music, one expects an evocative, eerie B & W kind of film, with its plotline about a boy who dies and has a trip to Heaven interrupted by detours to Purgatory and Hell."

"I am absolutely obsessed with "Blow Up Hollywood"! I don't write much anymore for the 'zine as I'm too busy with the administrative overhead, but
this one I'm doing! Really excellent disc!"

Robert R. Lewis, Editor-in-Chief of music-reviewer.com, July 2002

"blow up hollywood is a stark and thoughtfully composed meditation on death, dying, life and the afterlife, featuring plaintiff pianos, viably poignant vocals and mournful strings that quickly and consistently carve the path for clarity and introspection. It's hard to find words for a release this fresh and intelligent, so it's probably best to say that this is an absolute essential meant for those who wish to brace both beauty and sadness.

REVIEWS

"Holly's Kite"

I love the entire album, but I MUST comment on that first track. (Unfortunately cannot be reviewed here on CD Baby.) First of all, it really is a MUST with headphones. Do the headphones test, then without headphones and you will understand what I mean. Reminiscent of what birth must sound like to an infant. That is only the FIRST track, which is quite symbolic of the "birth" of this band. First track of first album. Keep listening to the rest of the the album and subsequent albums over the past decade and you're bound to fall in love with the music! Something to be said about a collective of musicians who manage to stay a band for that many years.

So "Holly's Kite" must be a conceptual reference to "HOLLYwood"? I noticed someone else made reference to "birth" in a review of that track. Never thought of it that way, but makes sense. I also love how this "Kite" idea re-emerges later in the album. I especially love the tracks "Ascension" and "Descend". ASCENSION: Delicate strings intro with subtle, almost subliminal a cappella like (Gregorian) chant out of a large cathedral as the bowing of the cello grows more intense, ends with a brief natural harmonic DESCEND: Surround sound dogs, twangy fiddle comes in strong, a modern sound, modern style of fiddle combined with drumming, clever passionate use of bow along with nice use of harmonics on the violin (wear headphones to catch subtle details) I normally SKIP tracks on albums. This is truly a work of art and well put together. The ordering of tracks, sounds/lyrics, conceptual themes, even titles of tracks.

I randomly showed up to a concert at the Rockwood Music Hall once in Manhattan. I loved the music. I'm slowly collecting all of the albums and enjoying each one. My favorite track on this one is "Floating" as it has a beautiful shape of instrumentals and captures the sweetness of lead singer's voice. What a phenomenal band!

Aside from the final track that doesn't go anywhere for me personally, the rest of the album is solid and totally is what B-UH is all about. This is the second album I bought by them and it is just as awesome as FAKE. Totally digging the voiceovers. Loving the lyrics as well. Your voice rocks!
