Album Notes

Last night was a long time coming. I’d been bombarded by friends and complete strangers about the greatness that is Blueheels. Alas, our paths never crossed in person until last night at the Majestic Theatre (Madison. Wi) for the band’s release party for Lessons In Sunday Driving.

The crowd was filled up with die hard loyalists to the group, ready to dance, shake and sing along. My familiarity with the group begins and ends with Lessons In Sunday Driving material, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying every single note and drop of excitement - a precursor to big things for this group.

Last year Bon Iver was Wisconsin’s biggest musical success to be catapulted out of state and onto critical acclaim and national attention. This year belongs to the Blueheels, whose sound rallies cries of Hank Williams and The Avett Brothers mixed with driving blues and foot stomping old-time country. All that and then the sprinkled in a surprising but spot-on cover of The Flaming Lips “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (Part 1).”

I’ve yet to call over to the Majestic to see if they were able to dislodge my jaw from the floor, as it may be permanently there. In truth, if this blog branched off and started a record label they’d be the first group I’d try to sign.

Lessons in Sunday Driving

I love listening to this album while driving; every song tempts me to sing along (loudly) in my car and has a kickass beat. The lyrics are candid and sincere, which is really refreshing in the midst of so many forced and banal lyrics these days. I highly recommend this album and seeing these guys play live, if you get a chance. They'll rock your pants off.
