Album Notes

Bluephonic is an Atlanta-based band with its roots in the blues, but their debut album is undeniably multi-genre. This release contains various styles of blues seasoned with elements of jazz, funk, swamp, and rock. Their guitar-driven sound centers around tastefully restrained riffs and a rock-solid rhythm section. The grooves are infectious and the vocals are powerfully soulful. If you love the blues but like to venture beyond the standard three-chord turnaround, Bluephonic is for you!

Bluephonic started out as a trio of musician friends getting together for acoustic jams on one of the member’s back porch in the Spring of 2003. Nicole Petersen (Vocals), Steve Sheckels (Guitar), and Leigh Barrett (Guitar and Vocals) had performed in different bands around the Atlanta area but never all in the same band at the same time.

What was happening on the porch sounded and felt so good the next step was logical. Gary Davis, another friend, was interested in adding bass and somehow Paul Cottrell was found to play drums and percussion.

There is a definite buzz around Atlanta that’s being caused by the release of their debut cd, “Don’t Let The Door Hit Ya.” There are 12 original songs on the cd, mostly penned by Steve with some assistance from Nicole and 1 written by Leigh. The remaining 2 tunes are covers of Tony Joe White’s “Undercover Agent For The Blues” and one originally recorded by kd lang, “Busy Being Blue.” Special guest Vic "Trola" Misiewicz lends his considerable harp skills to 3 of the tracks, as well. Each song is unique and combines elements of several genres of music to arrive at a sound that can only be described as Bluephonic.

Give it a listen, you will definitely enjoy it!

I have a copy of "The 2nd Annual Back Porch Blues Festival," recorded live back in 2001. BlueSolution kicks butt with the two songs that are on it. I inquired for more recordings of them from Blackjackblues@aol.com and he suggested this album. Although good, it lacks the fire of BlueSolution. Please find me some more BlueSolution!

I receive numerous self-produced CDs from musicians who hope their creative effort gets some air-time on my radio show or a positive review in an article I may write for a music publication. Bluephonic’s debut CD, Don’t Let the Door Hit Ya’, passed my litmus test on the first spin: chills ran up and down my spine and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Nicole Petersen’s powerful, yet sultry vocals grab your attention the first time you listen to the CD. Subsequent spins reveal the tight exchanges between guitarists Leigh Barrett and Steve Sheckels, backed by the “in-the-pocket” rhythm section of Gary Davis on bass and Paul Cottrell on percussion. Vic Trola’s soulful harp adds a mesmerizing blues accent in the right places. It all fits together – like the most comfortable clothes you own. The introspective quality of the group’s original songs is mirrored in lyrical content and sophisticated musical phrasing – a rare combination for a first release. Stand-out selections include: Blow Your Blues Away featuring some fine slide guitar riffs from Leigh Barrett. Flying Blind (written by Steve Sheckels) puts the spotlight on Nicole’s emotional vocal dynamics – absolutely stunning. Can’t You Hear is a beautiful a cappella, gospel-tinged original from Nicole that moves your soul. Go ahead, move this CD to the top of your stack – it is required listening.
