ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Originally formed by Christopher Howatt and Dana Merritt Boulevard East harkens back to a time when melodies were humable and lyrics were memorable, composed by such artists as the Gershwins, Hoagy Carmichael and Richard Rodgers, as well as celebrating outstanding contemporary songwriters from both the theatre and cabaret stages. Mr. Howatt serves as musical director, pianist and singer in the group. Joined by Ms. Merritt and soprano Beth Covell, they form the trio that performs those wonderful songs in "fabulous three-part harmony." Since their successful debut at The Triad in January 1997, the trio has performed at various prestigious venues and affairs throughout the New York Metropolitan area, including Don't Tell Mama, Judy's Chelsea, Mama Roses, Dillon's, The Garrick Gaieties, Manhattan School of Music, the Dutch Treat Club, Tavern-on-the-Green and Odette's in New Hope, PA. Under their former name, Eastern Standard Time, the trio was selected to appear at the Mabel Mercer Foundation's Tenth Anniversary Cabaret Convention at Town Hall, sharing the stage with such cabaret luminaries as Cybill Shepherd and Michael Feinstein, The trio has also been twice nominated in the Outstanding Vocal Group category for the MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs) Award. Thomas Stevens of Applause, Applause writes, "This is a vocal group with a great future in the entertainment world. They are just delightful!!"

Another noted cabaret artist, the multiple-award-winning vocalist Julie Reyburn writes: "...it was exciting to watch...the blend has never been better, the arrangements rock, and Chris, Dana and Beth each shine both in their dynamite solo numbers as well as the close harmonies."

Steve at The Green Lounge

Boulevard East Joins The Green Lounge-
November 02, 2004-

Boulevard East is Beth Covell, Christopher Howatt and Dana Merritt. This trio is a delightful addition to our playlist with a style that is best described as true cabaret in its scope. Although the album is peppered with accomplished solo work, the vocal stylings of this very polished group are at their best when they are singing these classic standards on their release "Timeless" as a Trio - their blend is so well-matched that it begs the listener to try and distinguish just who is who. The album has lovely renditions of "Over The Rainbow" and "Orange Colored Sky", as well as some well-thought through medleys and salutes to such greats as Hoagy Carmichael and Rodgers and Hart. All of this paired with the piano arrangements of Christopher Howatt make this a very enjoyable album and delightful addition to our playlist.

Grab your favorite cordial and sit back and enjoy this album in heavy rotation for the next couple of weeks on the Green Lounge.

Smooth, surprising harmonies!
I'm a sucker for tight harmonies and these guys got it in spades! Great, timeless classics and great medleys all arranged with some of the best harmonies I've ever heard. The blend is amazing and it's all very retro-sheik!
