Best part of some unparalled talents
author: The Island Ear - Tom D'angelo
With its sparsely and lilting rhythmic interplay between guitar and bongos, its dreamy sax runs and jazzy vocals, The Beatniks’ sound can’t help but betray its influences, and wonderful influences they are. Rickie Lee Jones, Randy Newman, Robbie Robertson, and Lou Reed immediately come to mind among some brilliant others. This is a group of excellent, tasteful musicians who are not afraid to incorporate the best parts of some unparalled talents, and with friends like The Scofflaws (who contribute horns) and Spider Nick Martielli, what else would you expect? Standout tracks include the infectious “20th Century LTD,” the Latin infused “Red Red Johnny, “ and the Buddy Holly-esque closer, “Anyroad”. A cool and fun recording.

Heart is consistently pleasing
author: Greg Fasolino - Huh Magazine
Far more assured and sonically arresting than on 1993’s Eleven Eleven, the Bossa Nova Beatniks have concocted a diverse second disc of ample retro charm, blending Tom Wait-ish blues, subtle folk, and languid rockabilly. Flavorfully spiked with jazzbo sax (including guest members of L.I. ska legends, The Scofflaws), Sugar Magnolia’s mini-choir, and a pungent panoply of congas, bongos, and other Afro-Latin percussion. The Beatniks’ zesty disparate strands are united by the distinctly soft, silky croon of leader Tom Gould. Peaking with the gorgeous, moonlit vamp of “20th Century LTD.” The slinky title cut, lilting “Fingers in The Cake,” and Dylan-gets-salsified rocker “Red Red Johnny”. Heart is consistently pleasing.
