The Boatbuilders have been performing together for over 4 years in the local Chicago area. With some amount of metamorphosis, the band's original four members have remained intact. It is interesting then, that their debut album captures only the most recent year in the band's existence. There has been a lot of self-discovery (fans who have one of the 3 previous demo recordings will be surprised by the voracity at which this band has eaten into the shell of what we all thought they were). Celery Moonbeams is a culmination of many years of effort, growth, collaboration, and groove coming together with the timeless sounds of rock, blues, jazz, latin, funk, reggae, indie, and folk. All this overlies psychedelic undertones and a progressive edge. One fan insists the band is nothing short of magic... When the energy in the room begins to flow in a circle from band member to band member, the effect is more than the sum of the parts. When the audience begins to share in the groove, the energy is magical, the grooves, transcendent, the music, inspirational, and the experience, unforgettable. Not to mention, wherever it is, it's a hell of a party. Rock on.

"There's a tight feeling of unity that has the arc of a jamband but the fluidity

I was instantly intrigued by The Boatbuilders due to their creative album title. The quartet did not dissapoint on the inside either, with a pleasant cornucopia of music. Celery Moonbeams serves up ten songs of raw creativity and sheer talent. I thought I had figured out their niche after the first couple of songs but quickly learned I was wrong when I realized how diverse this band is.
The disc opens up with "Left Bridge" introducing the listener to a heavy powerchord, Frank Zappa sounding song. With nice harmonies on the chorus, this song was reminiscient of a great 70's rock tune.
Quick to change it up though, the next song, "Caveman" features a bouncy chord progression and layered piano fills. This song reminded me of Phish's "Guyute" at times, yet has the intricacies of their tune, "Fluffhead." Not to say The BB sounds like Phish, but you can definitely hear their influence. The title track "Celery Moonbeams" again offers a completely different sound with its reggae beat and upbeat lyrics. I was instantly drawn to this song and found myself listening to it several times.
The CD progresses with a wide array of music. Several songs feature heavy guitar solos yet are complimented nicely by organ and driving rhythms. There is no evidence of any one leader of the band which is nice to hear such a collective unit. "Whispers in the Graveyard" closes the disc with the song I found to be my favorite. The flowing acoustic number swings back and forth with creative lyrics and textured harmony. Overall, The Boatbuilders have built a disc with all the variety a listener could want. There's a tight feeling of unity that has the arc of a jamband but the fluidity of classically trained musicians. There is enough improvisation that makes me think their live show is the way to go with these guys. Check them out!
